{storehouse of memories}

While going through storage bins in the garage the other day looking for Ben's summer shorts and my summer sandals... since I knew I had more than the 15 pair I'd already unpacked! I came across some things that I hadn't seen in a long time~

LETTERS....

from Shayne when we were courting. The whole of our relationship he was in Chicago the first half, and Canada the second~ it was before the days of Skype, personal computers, and cell phones (or before the day EVERYONE owned one).

So there were letters - lots and lots of letters!

How silly I must have looked sitting on that pile of dusty old skids, sweat dripping from my forehead, a smile from ear to ear - - - and a slight blush on my face occasionally, pulling the letter in a bit closer in case someone just happened to be walking behind me in my own garage and saw what was written!!!!

And when I wasn't writing letters to my love, I was writing all about it in my journal~

I have about six journals filled cover to cover from our 9 month relationship. Yep - from when we first started contacting each other, to when we walked down the aisle and said, "I do!" was just about exactly NINE months!!!

It does sound a little crazy short nowadays I suppose.. but when you know, you KNOW! Why prolong the agony of being separated. :)

These are some cassette tapes - remember those things - that he made for me of him reading Scripture.
I would fall asleep every night listening~
I still love the sound of his voice reading the Bible to me.

I wonder if there's a way to transfer these to a cd? I'd love for the kids to hear....

Here's another memory I found - which reading through made me laugh out loud.

A book I wrote when I was about 15. I think it's a series~ :)

I brought them in to show Kate, and later caught her reading one while sitting on the steps...

It was one of those moments where I flashed back in my mind and saw myself sitting in a similar fashion pouring over those notebooks, scribbling away.. never imagining then that someday I'd have a girl of my own reading what I'd wrote.

I went in her room the other night and saw the notebooks piled up on her nightstand. She said she likes the story, but some of my writing is hard to make out! :)

Funny, I still prefer to write by hand than type ~ ~ my thoughts always seem to come easier with a real pen and paper in hand.

= = ~ = = ~ = =

We have a stray cat that showed up here months ago.

We named it Sammy.

But found out a few weeks back it's actually a Samantha!!!

I always get tickled when I think of how Shayne is so not a cat lover -
me either really, though I don't mind them -
we're just more dog kind of people....
but it seems we can't keep a dog and the cats keep multiplying!!! :)

We still have our black and white yard sale one I picked up last summer -
and now three strays that have decided to stay!
And with the recent addition of kittens~ we now have TEN cats!!!

So yeah.. for not being huge cat fans you'd never know it around here. :)

Here's the proud mommy... atleast I think she is.
She kinda looks more tired than proud.
I don't blame her...
she just had six babies all at the same time!!)

"
Humans are the only animals that have children on purpose
with the exception of guppies, who like to eat theirs."
:)

She keeps them in this tree - which seems like the perfect little home to me.
This tree is
missing it's whole middle, you'd think it would be dead!
but every year it comes back!!
I think it's a cool looking tree.

I love this tree!

My camera is broke. (kinda)

A month or two ago the shutter button seemed to be sticking..

and it became harder and harder to push down.

This past weekend, after our time on the lake, it stopped taking pictures all together! Everything else seemed to work fine - it just wouldn't take a picture (which having a camera that won't do that is rather pointless!) :)

And Monday it wouldn't turn on at all...

So I put it away and planned on taking it in to the camera store. I think my year warranty is almost up.

However yesterday, I randomly picked it up, flipped the switch, and it came on!

Seems to be working normal again.

So - I'm not sure if it was a fluke, or still has a problem....

(??)

Since Sunday I've been in the chiropractors office twice, throwing up, and living on Advil!! (well, not throwing up and taking advil at his office.. that, I've done at home!) : /

It happens EVERY time I ride a sea-doo!!! Seriously...

this time I thought I was so careful to not jump the waves and do all the craziness I usually like doing, but ... the chiropractor says he sees people all the time after they've ridden those things!

"You use muscles you don't usually use and you don't even realize it at the time."

"But you should see the crazy things my brothers do on them!!"

"They're probably younger..."

he smiled.

I did not.

"Well my husband is my age and he's just as crazy as my brothers..."

"He probably uses those muscles more than you do..."

he smiled again.

again, I did not.

Because what he's really saying is that I'm old and out of shape!

= = ~ = = ~ = =

While playing cowboys today I told Ben to give me his best cowboy pose~

I LOVE this kid!!

 = = ~ = = ~ = =

Here's something I've been mulling over awhile... .

When I started blogging four years ago I'd never even heard of such a thing. A group at my church had started a blogring, and I was rather "talked into it." :)

To show my world wide web ignorance I thought xanga was the only blogging place there was - and that the only people who really blogged were bored stay at home moms!! :)  :)  I also thought the only people who could read my blog were those from my church! The first time an "outsider" commented I figured they must have hacked in or something. :)

Well, my knowledge of blogging has expanded (a little)...

And even though most all of my church friends have moved on to facebook it's become a convenient outlet for me to record things from life, as well as connect with other great women - - that I now know are NOT merely bored stay at home moms - - - *big smile*

All this to say.. since discovering other "places" I've been thinking of moving from xanga. At first it was simply because I liked the looks better - yes, I base decisions upon looks!!!   But then a web design friend was telling me there would be better options with some things I was wanting to do with writing (eventually).

... part of me doesn't like the idea of learning a new method, etc. I'm lazy that way. :) But part of me likes the idea of change. Still, the biggest part of me is a sentimental loyalist, and I don't want to lose the friends I've made here...

SO - - why don't we all move!!!! :) :)    ... (kidding)

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts and a). what made you choose to blog with xanga? and b). why do you stay?

Who knows... I'll probably be blogging here when I'm 90!!

if I can still see that is! :)

More than anything, I'm probably just thinking out loud about it all...~

= = ~ = = ~ = =

Can't believe it's time to make dinner.. didn't we just finish lunch?

In the summer I kinda lose motivation to cook... we don't have air in the house and it gets so stinkin hot when I turn the oven on!!

We try to think of all we can to cook on the grill,
but I don't think I have anything to fix on there tonight~

hmmm.. I wonder how much protein there is in ICE CREAM!!

Surely enough to be somewhat nutritious, eh?...

(an older shot of emma - but it's a favorite!)

Yeah, its a no brainer. You should move to blogger.
Or I'm guessing your"friend" is building a case for Word Press. They do look impressive. I just like the power of Google. They're not going anywhere.
Pretty pics.

I loved going through your packed boxes with you! I recognized some of those stamps!

I had a cat named Sammy that was renamed Samantha. I nicknamed her Sammy (or Sam), anyway.

Your chiropractor doesn't know what he's talking about. *I'M* old and out of shape! You are no where near in as bad of shape as me! LOL!!!!

I blog on Xanga because I thought only women did it (the girls' therapist giggles at me and says she thought only teenagers used Xanga!) and, in my sheltered world, Xanga was the only option besides My Space. Yes, I'm ignorant and it's hard for me to get used to new things. I am on Facebook, but NEVER use it. I'm not sure I know how. And, let's face it, Amber, I write way too much to be "Facebook material" - don't ya think?!!!

Are you talking about going to blogger.com?? I started there....for what that's worth...I've only been blogging for a nano second compared to you! Anyway, it didn't seem as photo friendly. I haven't looked at it in a while. If you move, I might move!
Uhm....yeh, watch it on the SEA DOO! The puking would do it for me.
Hope your camera is all good!
Love ya!

You are such a great writer. That is so cool that your daughter is reading the stories you wrote as a girl. Also, I hope my son still wants to play cowboy when he is Ben's age. That is awesome!

So glad you will still be posting till you're 90 years old on here.I am already looking forward to it:)I know xanga is not"cool"anymore but I still like it.Probably because I'm familiar with it.
Your camera did the exact same thing as our dishwasher did this week.Yesterday it had this wild notion to start working again. If it wants to quit on us I really wish it would do it before the warranty is expired:)
Your idea for dinner sounds delicious.I'm sure you can get enough nutrients out of that to last you till morning.

I really do love Word Press, but I must admit, I've felt a little like an outsider with the xanga community. I love so many christian women's blogs on xanga and you all seem to have such a great bond. Be glad you started with xanga, because I'm sure you will keep those true friendships even if you decide to move your blog. I will follow your blog wherever you go, friend! :)

Such a precious picture of little Emma with her ice cream cone... the epitome of summer.

I also have love letters tucked away from the courtship with my husband... (and notebooks of books I've written! Though I don't think they were ever good enough to share them with my daughter! :) Such fun to go back and refresh our memories with the past.

Such a fun post... I love all the bits and pieces of life.

Melissa

P.S. Did you get my message that I sent? I'm not quite sure that I did it right.

It can be distracting looking through storage, huh? But what a treasure you found for your kids! I have a huge box of love letters Jeff and I wrote to each other from years back when we were apart. I would be embarrassed for our kids to read them even now. ~ very personal. Maybe one day...... when I'm dead. ha ha

Beautiful pictures and beautiful thoughts, my beautiful friend.

Hi Amber! Well, what did you end up with for dindin? We don't have air in our house either! I use the crockpot sometimes and I also do soft tacos with flour tortillas; that way you can cook the ground beef in the crockpot and then heat up the beans and tortillas quickly on the stove. Throw in a bit of grated cheese and tomatoes and you're good to go. Another idea; grab an already roasted chicken from the store. At home get out a glass pie pan and grease it with a bit of pam. Pour in enough enchilada sauce to cover the bottom. Put in a flour tortilla. then some chicken that you've pulled off and cut into smaller pieces. Then cheese and enchilada sauce. And green chiles if your family likes them. (WE DO)!. then just do more layers like that. Cover it with wax paper and zap in the microwave til it's all heated through. Sometimes I make a bigger batch (2 chickens) and put it in my glass Pyrex mixiing bowl. It's easy! If enchilada sauce is too intense, you can use half a small can and mix it with stewed tomatoes. And yeah, I'm pretty sure Blogspot and Blogger are the same; at least they both end up in the same place! Love, GAil (Your Chiro. is nuts if he implies that you're out of shape!) ( :

So...I loved the first part of this post! Sounds similar to our early days; lots of letters and phone calls from Northern Ontario to PA, to KS...and it's SO fun to look thru our boxes of letters and cards! Precious memories.

Why I chose xanga; wasn't sure where else to go at the time I signed up, and since the people that kept sending me invites were on here, I figured it was a good place to start. But, I'm with you that there are so many other options that look nice; there are things about xanga that I could do without, or change. But! I love the community of friends I have made on here, and it would be sad to part ways for that reason. Plus, uh-hum...I'm familiar with this site now, and the thought of starting over elsewhere, is a bit much for my not-so-overly-techy brain! Anyhow...

hope you're soon recovered from your bout of sickness!

have a lovely weekend!

Hmm.  Dare I say that we have had homemade ice cream as supper (with nothing else) a few times?  No, I probably shouldn't admit that, should I?

Glad your camera was restored!

And as for xanga, I have been thinking about switching, too.  Like you, I think it seems like a lot of trouble.  Most of the people I knew on here have moved on elsewhere, so I'm trying to figure out whether I'm just following the crowd or if I really have a valid reason to change.  I'm not really sure.  I have dreamed of having a blog that actually makes me money someday, but I don't think that can happen on xanga, so I feel like I should be looking at options.  Of course, no more readers than I have, the paying blog is probably a pipe dream anyway...

What special little treasures you found!   Isn't it so neat to look back on your dating days!?!

I started with xanga to journal our move from AK to Cali.  I actually didn't keep it up during our journey, but I've picked it back up since the first of the year.  My friend's sister blogs on xanga and thought it would be fun to keep connected with friends and new friends I've met blogging.  I've enjoyed getting to know so many Christian ladies blogging!

:) I've been meaning to make it to the comment section for several days now - would start to read and then up again and then no chance to read again... I'm sure you know.

Anyway,

I remember the courtship letter days too :) special - I miss the old fashioned letter days really. Robert and I haven't given up on them totally. though now we email each other too. oh, and the days we would send faxes! haha. Good for you looking through those and thinking back. precious. God given.

Like Ben's cowboy looks :) he'd fit in fine here near the border. just fine ~ ;)

on to supper - um yes, my kitchen burns up when the over is on! oh my, yes. so a few nights even in the last few weeks - since we workout later to miss the heat we come in and don't want to burn up and we've had strawberries and whip cream or icecream or lots of fresh cut up fruit with yogurt and stuff like that. I just let them eat it and eat it until they fill up! haha. yeah, I cook too - but seriously there are nights where beating the heat of the kitchen and seeing their happy faces for fresh fruit and whip cream makes it just fine. :) who says supper has to be the biggest meal of the day anyway. I read that breakfast should be and it's healthier that way anyway !

as for xanga - the reason I stay and did it to begin with - I like the way the photos appear on xanga more than any other site/blogger, etc. I like how I can make them large and download easy. What is the use of posting pics that are so tiny you can't tell what they are? blogger, blogspot, all the rest don't seem as photo friendly - though I could be wrong. I also like the simplicity. I like the easy layout. I like that it doesn't feel like a "blog" site all done up but rather fits the purpose nicely, etc. Course, the other sites are fine and nice too - it's just a preference thing I'm sure.

oh on the camera thing -- have you had it cleaned recently? if not, that could be it. My cameras will act up especially after being around water, sand, etc. and it's because they need a good cleaning. You can take it in and pay a little fee to have it done - which I do about once a year or twice -- or learn to do it yourself. Look it up online for directions - it's not hard, you need the right stuff to clean with though. My camera always works so nice after a cleaning. If you go without cleaning after it's been in the elements of nature, things get clogged up, stuck and though it might still work, it usually will act up again until you get a good cleaning.

another idea on that - shutter might need replacement. Also w/ Canon - if warranty is gone - you can call them, send it in, and get it fixed and it's typically not that much money - depending on the problem of course - but it's good to call and talk to them first and explain and get an estimate. Also, their turn around time getting it back isn't too bad. I'd try a good cleaning though first, if you haven't already. :)

blessings!

Seriously?!  That's so cute!  Sometimes I miss the "hard copy" or "paper trail" life.  And I'm YOUNG!  I was scrapbooking though and wanted to do something neat from when my best friend/cousin left me for the Marines and I only have ONE real letter from him.  Scrapbooking is not so cute w/ printed emails!

I'm glad you shared about the long distance 9 mos relationship that led to your adorable family because my other cousin recently married a man she has only been with for 8 or 9 mos and he is in the Army and they do the long distance deal as well.. makes me feel better about it!

Remember part of that list I posted?  It said eat breakfast like a queen, lunch like a princess, and dinner like a college student with a maxed out charge card.  So maybe for the summer (at least) you could start doing that and cutting down the heat made from your oven!

Great pics btw!

I love, also, that you shared your storehouse of memories with us.  I smiled at, "Beloved Amber" and also on the tape, "YOUR Shayne Joseph"  That is sooooo sweet.

I do not have letters.  But I do have a journals (that are never finished.....)

On the Cat issue.....I have one, Spaz, who was a stray.  I might have at least one more----if Spaz didn't beat it up, which incidently, he did to one kitten when it wondered onto our property.  The poor thing.  I saw Spaz bat at the little thing once or twice and I never saw it again.  I hope that he didn't kill it, but I feel that the little one just ran and never looked back.  LOL

That tree is really cool!  There is a pretty big magnolia tree that grows up near where my mom and dad lives, that was hit by lightning twice, fell over and still grows and blooms beautifully!  I will have to get a photo of it.

Now, the Xanga question.  I LOVE MY XANGA.  I have a facebook that I frequent every day420, but like you, I don't feel like I can "blog" there like I can here.  I have a blogger blog too, but I just really don't know how to venture about it.  I don't get it.  I guess I've been using Xanga so long that it is the most user friendly to me.  Like Alyssa, I like the photo options on Xanga.  Even if your photo is too big, you can set what size you want it when you post them and it's very easy to upload them.  NOT TO MENTION, I absolutely like the people I've met through Xanga and enjoy reading and commenting their blogs.  Some still have not EVER posted comments on mine and of course, I've pretened that it doesn't bother me.  HAHA, but really it doesn't stop me from enjoying their post.   Xanga is just so much easier, even through some of it's glitches.

I do have many Blogger Blogs saved in my favorites folder, but I don't feel that it's for me.  Please don't leave us.

Just a little note---Ice Cream has milk.  Milk is good for the body, yes??  : )   You might try to google, "summer cooking".  Maybe you can find some recipes that are quick and easy for those hot summer days!  That, of course, include ice cream for dessert!!
