{Cooking. Having babies in my old age. And a few things in between.}
Growing up I was never one of those girls who loved to sew and cook
and sit around practicing piano…
I would much rather be in the barn than the kitchen.
And playing football with my brother and his friends than trying to sew.
I think my mom secretly worried about my future husband.
And to assure me.. and mostly herself, she’d say every now and then -
“Oh, you’ll be okay. If you can read you can cook!” : )
I remember Shayne asking me when we were engaged what all I could make, and I said,
“I honestly don’t know…”
So… he must have loved me an awful lot to take that risk!!! ; )
But mom was right.
My reading skills proved to be okay,
and soon cooking became something I really loved doing.
{shocking my mother}
(my favorite cook book~ a gift at my bridal shower)
I’m not a huge baker. I’d rather cook than bake.
But what I’d really rather do is just eat!!
I used to enjoy planning a 2 week menu~
going to the grocery to buy everything.
Trying new stuff. Making up my own.
I found it relaxing to be in the kitchen.
(great biscuit recipe~ I like adding cheese and garlic)
Then. Something changed.
I think it’s called kids.
and time and them getting older and running here and there every night~
this past year especially it seemed that trying to make a decent meal was so complicated.
We got into eating out alot – I think we all still groan every time we pass a Wendy’s.
But, they call it FAST food for a reason, and fast is convenient when you’re on the go..
And though I never really make New Year’s resolutions I did make one this year….
To get back into cooking and making sure we’re having as many home cooked meals as possible.
Besides just being healthier and saving money,
I think there’s something to sitting down around a table together.
A meal time is such an intimate time in my opinion..
a time for everyone to connect..
to have undivided attention in front of the whole family to talk and tell about your day –
I’ve never bought into the theory that kids are to be seen and not heard!
But goodness! As I’m rediscovering.. preparing meals is hard
and Wendy’s gets to sounding pretty good when that 6 o clock rush of daddy’s coming home, get the house picked up, change from my sweat pants, stick on some deodorant and be standing in the kitchen all pretty and wifely looking, with something yummy in the oven, trying not to look cross eyed with frustration when he walks in the door!!!
Anyone else know that feeling~ ; )
(brown sugar~ my favorite ingredient.. it’s like building sand castles)
I have found not waiting till the last minute is helpful.
To get back into my meal planning and stick to it.
And try to do as much of the prep early on~
I love meals that can slow cook all day too.
That’s heaven come dinner time, to just have to pull it out!
If you have any good suggestions shoot them my way….
Here’s my favorite from last week~ Homemade Chicken noodle soup…
which with all the butter you use, it would make even Julia Child proud!
(my mom’s recipe~ if you have a cold, I promise this WILL cure you)
(the biscuit recipe above~ when you roll the dough thin they come out more like crackers)
= = ~ = = ~ = = ~ = = ~ = =
I officially made up my mind about something the other day…
I would rather go through labor than go to the dentist!
honestly.
No matter how hard I tried to “find a happy place. find a happy place.”
When I hear the bizzzzzzzz of that drill in my mouth, there is none to be had!
I had cracked my front tooth…
the one I had cracked previously, that I filed with my nail file….
But now was too big to file on my own…
and I cracked it trying to bite off the acrylic nails I got with the gift card Shayne gave me for Christmas….
which I didn’t want to get the fill-in’s because they were too expensive…
so, instead…. end up with a tooth repair that was 3 times as much!!
I can hear my friends saying, “This is such a Amber story!”
Yes. it is.
But the Amber part only gets worse~
I had called the office and asked how much the repair would be…
the same tooth had chipped back in 07, and the receptionist looked it up and told me it would be 68 dollars.
That sounded reasonable, so I set up my appointment.
But once I was there…
laying back in the chair, with the little blue paper bib already on, the metal clamper thing holding my mouth open, and the tool tray pushed up to my chin ready for the procedure…
the doctor said~,
“I see a sticky note on your file that says you called to ask the price…”
I nodded.
“It’ll be 203.”
“Two hundred and three dollars?” I repeated. Though not quite as clear as that since I had this huge metal thing stuck in my mouth.
He nodded.
“The receptionist said it would be 68?”
“That’s because last time we didn’t charge you for the office visit…” He answered. Though not quite as clear as that since he was wearing his mask over his mouth.
“Oh.”
I wish I were quicker in math and could have tallied that up so I would have known what that actually meant was,
the office visit was 140 dollars while the procedure was only 68…!
Of course I didn’t realize this all until my husband did the tallying later that day,
and was frustrated with me that I didn’t just leave. :/
But I assured him next time I’m in the dentist chair and find out the price is more than double what I was quoted…
I’ll jump up, tear my paper bib off, rip the metal clamp from my mouth, and march out!
promise. : ))
Who cares if I don’t get my free tooth brush.
(before and after pictures my dentist sent~ scary)= = ~ = = ~ = = ~ = = ~ = =
Another thing I promised him I’d start doing was cutting his hair. : /
Which you have to understand this is a huge promise…
even bigger than the “flee over priced dentist” one.
I hate cutting hair.I don’t ever remember when I was little, having someone ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and saying…
“A Hair cutter!!”
But, as I’ve discovered as a wife and mother there’s lots of job descriptions I never bargained for!
So we got a brand new clipper set to help with my job, since our old one nearly pulled your hair out before it would cut it.
(Ben got to be the first to try them out)
(see how shiny~ that weird Avatar looking person is me!)
(look how many whatever they’re called came with it!!)
Do they honestly think you’d put each one on and go in order??
It would take me 3 hours to cut someone’s hair that way.Ben prefers hats to haircuts.
I think I do too. :p
= = ~ = = ~ = = ~ = = ~ = =
Shayne brought me these tulips the other day which I guess was a good exchange for a hair cut~
though it was before I had actually cut his hair, so I think they were “just cause.”
Reminds me spring is around the corner.
And I’m glad about that.

If you want to hear a fun song, full of truth, scroll down to my playlist to #19
{let me know if you hear any weird rap songs} ;0
The kids and I love dancing around the house to it.
I was going to link it on my post I did recently about relationships, but forgot.
Maybe it’s been around awhile~ but I just discovered it.

(valentine m&m’s are the best~ love the pink& white colors)

This is Ben’s first year on a league team in basketball…
he’s played Upward in the past, and we love that program,
but felt he was ready to move into something more competitive.
Ben plays hard, and he has alot of natural talent his coach says…
but one thing he really needs to work on, and the same was true in football,
is being more aggressive!Which the other day while yelling from the stands it all struck me very funny…
As parents we work hard to try to teach our children to be gentle and kind, to share and not be too rough or too loud….
then we stick them on a playing field and we’re like, “Kill em!!! Get that ball!! Take him down!!! Be AGGRESSIVE!!!”
No wonder there’s a confused look on most kids faces for the first few years upon joining organized sports!!!
And we thought it was because they didn’t know what to do with that ball once they got it. : )
(Ben’s tongue hangs out when he runs.. one of these days I know he’s going to bite it off)
= = ~ = = ~ = = ~ = = ~ = =After Ben’s game Saturday Kate took our picture cause she said we matched.
I think I look like my brother Jeff when I wear a hat.
So I guess this is what I’d look like as a boy.
A boy with pink lipstick that is.
= = ~ = = ~ = = ~ = = ~ = =
In a few weeks I’ll be 36, and that just seems crazy to me to be four years away from 40.
I’m not really bothered by it… just sobered maybe.
40 seems halfway….
halfway to where, I’m not sure.
death?
But then again I’ve never really thought I’d only live to be 80..
so not sure where that feeling comes from!
One thing that does kinda nag at me when I think about my age is having more children… of course, we’d love to.
But sometimes, with each year that passes I wonder - and at this rate, my other kids would be so much older.
But then I remember this guy~
who turns 19 in two days.
I can’t imagine life without him…
and suddenly I realize that 17 years between siblings is really no big deal at all.

great post! great hat on Shane!….
my crew around here would like it.
Yay for basketball & learning the balance of aggression on the court and kindness at home. (we’re working on it too ’round here!)
That’s great about getting into more cooking/baking. I love making soups this time of year. And any warm baked goods. although, I’ve not been in my house for 3 weeks, so I’ve not done much of it lately.
blessings on your week, my friend!
oh, and LOVE that #19 song. definitely a favorite ’round here too.
I’ll be back….
I hope that’s a public announcement I see…!!
Love you. Sorry I’ve been MIA. I’m officially over the hill now and thus have tons of time to bum around and chatter to my friends through my missing teeth.
great post! You look like you are turning 26
while eating dinner
sorry about the dentist..the pain of being there and the pain of it draining the pocket book
but your tooth sure does look good now
I hear you on cooking..I’m not a big fan
I made homemade mac&cheese last night and the recipe called for onion
only to have a hubby and 2 kids say yucky onion
didn’t do much for encouraging my cooking desires
Your homemade food looks Delicious..especially that soup right now
love your blog..always delightful!
such a fun mix in this post! the profile header is adorable~ i’m especially looking forward to that upcoming holiday this year.
your cooking/baking creations look amazing! good for you for making that resolution this year!
and as far as the age difference~ my next bro is 7 years older than me….and i wouldn’t have it any other way.
(funny thing is~ he married a girl 2 weeks older than me, lol.)
have a wonderful week, friend!!
p.s. love brandon heath’s music~ his “give me your eyes” is also a great one (my cell’s ringback tone
I want to get back into cooking more as well. My Mom left yesterday. I’m realizing that a lot of things fell by the wayside these past few months.
Happy Birthday ~ “in a few weeks”
Jay and Shivy are 19 years apart. So were my Dad and his oldest sister.
She’s still alive ~ while my Dad passed on nearly 3 years ago. So you never know Amber; you may live to be 100 years old yet….. In which case, you’re just getting started!!
Have a great Monday (is this even possible?)
Great post that covered a lot of things. I enjoyed your cooking musings, the dentist story, and your discussion about age. I loved the pictures of the roses and the two of you in baseball hats.
okay, don’t scare me like that. I’ve never had any work done in my mouth (cavities, etc) and to think of rather having a baby than going to the dentist? seriously, can it be that bad?!? well, maybe don’t answer that question. I’ll just stay in the dark on it.
but, on the whole rest of the post, all I can say is
. (and I like song # 19, kinda catchy )
R
There are 24 years between my first and last kids, (total of 7 kids.) I had my 5th baby at 36, 6th at 42, and 7th and last at 46. I was ‘only’ 45 through most of the pregnancy and turned 46 one week before he was born. I had a maternity shirt that said “Yes, I am.”
A plus is that by the time he was weaned I was almost through menopause, and had no problems at all. We never really had an empty nest. Our youngest moved out, and my mom moved in.
I’m so lucky in the cooking department, I’m married to a chef. But, I do still enjoy cooking myself. 2 years ago was the craziest year of our lives when we had all 4 girls in dance and spent over 12 hours a week in a dance studio (our oldest was in a dance company and danced 5 to 6 days a week). We never saw each other and eating together was just not in the picture. After that year we gave everything up and returned to focusing on our family. It was the BEST thing we ever did. They are still involved in activities, but nothing that takes that much time away from home. It was nice getting back in the kitchen and cooking again. I’m big into the slow food movement now and really try to avoid the fast food places. If you haven’t seen the movie Food Inc. watch it. I only THOUGHT I understood where food comes from! lol As far as having children far apart, my oldest is 6 years older than her next sister and then my 2nd daughter is 4 years older than the 3rd. The only two I had close were number 3 and 4, they are only 15 months apart. We pray all the time for more and if I got pregnant right now, my oldest would be almost 17 years older than that baby.
Do you think I could borrow Kate’s boots sometime?
Cuz I just love ‘em and they look like me.
Last Thursday I sat on the dentist’s chair and told my hygienist that I would rather give birth to babies
than experience a dental appointment.
She laughed.
But I wasn’t joking.
I know that your mom’s brownies are the best. I can tell by the frosting!
I have a cookbook like that…I can find my favorite recipes by looking for stained and splattered pages…lol…
I love your tulips and your little word thingys on each container.
And mealtime together…we laugh… because it doesn’t always look or sound like what I/we had in mind!!!
But still. It is precious even when it’s not. er. something like that.
Forty is great. It’s happening to younger and younger people all the time. I would know!
I think I have that same cookbook. I too try to plan meals for the week (or at least have a list of suggestions). I work sometimes in the evening, so I try to have something “quick and easy” for the family at home. Love those recipes from your mom with the rough edges and the stains…love the memories behind the handwriting and the stains. I can tell the recipes I love in the cookbooks by the dirty pages…LOL.
The dentist story made me smile right down to the bib, clamps in the mouth… I always cringe when I see the bill!! We don’t have dental insurance, so I just take slow deep breaths and smile so they don’t see the PAIN. (it’s more painful paying than having the procedure!!)
Loved this post. So REAL LIFE.
Oh, and I wanted to say before that I really like your header!
HA! Jeff wanted me to learn to cut hair, it was getting a little pricy to have 4 boys done every few weeks. So he went out and bought a very nice set of clippers and wanted me to try! My mom has always cut my brother’s hair, so now it was time for me to learn. I told him the story of how I tried to cut my brother’s hair and he had little bald spots all over when I was finished, and then how I tried to “trim” my sister’s hair and she had a 6 inch trim up to her chin! Well, I didn’t want to do it, and since the end of summer Jeff is the official “barber” in our house! I am scared to death to touch Jeff’s hair!!! Maybe one day I’ll be brave, but I can just picture it now…Jeff will have a buzz cut, and it will be because of me!
Your food looks good, the pictures are cute, and I love the tulips! And spaces between kids, well….I say it’s no big deal! Hope you guys have a good Monday! =)
Years ago I worked at a dentist’s office and I remember a lady coming in saying that too, she’d rather be having a baby. Now that I’ve experienced both, hmmm, not sure on that, ha. Welcome to the 36 club! It’s really not so bad, especially if there are other cool 36ers along for the ride, so welcome. =) Now I need to go check out #19. Have a blessed day~
I have the same cookbook and I love it. Mine is falling apart as well. I ask my son to bring me the “Really old, falling apart, red-checkered cookbook” …he knows exactly which one!
Love the tooth picture. I hate going to the dentist. Makes me very upset, even to have teeth cleaned. I’d really hate being a dental hygienist.
I’ve been cutting my guys hair for almost 20 years…think of the money I’ve saved! I’ve also gotten to be really good. I even branched out to ladies. I’ve been doing my own hair since high school.
I am almost 40…doesn’t feel too bad yet. My husband still LOVES me.
I’m ready for a baby anytime! ((Hear that Lord?))
Great Post!
I’m glad you like to cook ~ I wish I did ~ but alas, it is near the bottom of my list ~
I love it! You’re so good to change from your sweatpants. That’s something I want to try to do more of – cook and be cute when he gets home. HAHA. Awesome post. Gorgeous pics – I love the flowers.
This is first year we’ve really had major evening commitments that have put the squeeze on dinners, but so far, we’ve managed to stick to sitting down at home, more than eating on the drive. We eat early at 5pm, because here, Daddy has to get onthe bust 5:30pm for Night Shift. It’s a different kind of frenzy, to get the girls off the school bus and have dinner ready for Daddy to have a good meal before he leaves. But I will push for it as much as I can as the girls get busier, because you are right about dinner together…it’s important family sharing time! ANYWAY, for Christmas I got this slow-cooker recipe book:
http://www2.gooseberrypatch.com/gooseberry/products.nsf/v.weball/Slow-Cooker_Recipes_Cookbook_Rival_Crock-Pot_Crockpot_-Itemm947?editdocument&lid=is_M947|cartprocess=isearch
I am totally lovin’ it. I too am a two-week menu planner and I have tried out some very yummy new meals in this book!
I had to chuckle about what you said about our young athletes learning to be aggressive. Lonna just finished her basketball season…she too is not naturally aggresive and was totally overwhelmed by a girl or two that had already mastered this technique! I have no desire for her to be nasty, maybe just a little more confident about “going for it”!
I vote YES to more kids! my mom had 11! and it’s so much more fun with more siblings! never a dull moment either! Thanks for the comment the other day at well, it was very encouraging! <3
I do enjoy cooking most days, but don’t love to menu plan! I find menu planning my saving grace most months. I plan our menus a month at a time since I don’t care to do it much. The family likes to suggest favorite meals they would like too. Friday nights we always have some fast food like food as we have family movie night. I do find that it is a real savings as well. I just bought groceries for the month and spent about 500.00 for the month and that included paper products at Sam’s Club as well. We feed 6-7 people each night for supper, occassionally one more as someone will have a friend over too.
We are pretty busy and I find that having a meal together grounds us and gives us some family time. I plan easy meals for busy nights. That could be a slow cooker meal or a casserole mixed and ready for the oven. I have even had made wraps or subs before hand that can be grabbed on really busy nights as our kind of fast food.
I am participating in Menu Plan Monday and find that motivates me and give me ideas. This Meme usually has about 500 particpants each Monday. http://orgjunkie.com/2010/01/menu-plan-monday-feb-1st.html Good luck with everything…………
As always, your photos are wonderful!! I especially love the header pics of the kids. Have a great day!!
I had a real chuckle when you said you filed your tooth with your nail file….I DID THE SAME THING…I thought I was the only one who did that
. Love your pics and your post. Have a blessed week!
Cooking has never been my strong suit, but I don’t dislike it. I agree with your mother – If you can read, you can cook. I’ve always said that about sewing – most patterns are very explanatory and pretty easy to follow. I’m not a good cook, but an adequate one. I will tell you this – enjoy cooking for people who have very definite likes and dislikes, and who enjoy your cooking. I am now cooking for my elderly parents (nearly 90 & 82) and neither of them enjoys food any longer. Therefore they don’t know what they want, don’t like my suggestions, and don’t eat much of what is placed before them even if they asked for it!! Cooking for persnickety kids was MUCH easier than this!!
Ah, the dentist! I never had mouth issues until I was older, and not many now, but the dentist has not been an easy trip for me. I’m somewhat claustrophobic, so when he puts that metal thing in my mouth to hold it open, then runs water into my mouth and tells me not to swallow – oh, my word!!! Kill me now!
My oldest sis and I are 20 years apart, and I’m not the youngest. My daughter-in-law is 18 years older than her baby sister, and not only do they have a great relationship, Emily’s mom (MomStranz) looks young enough to be Emily’s sister, and she has 11 kids! If God desires more children for your family, I say go for it. If not, He has a plan for that, too. We lost our last pregnancy to miscarriage 8 years ago – it was so difficult to understand God’s reasoning, but now I think about how difficult it would be to give my parents the care they need with an 8 year old living with us. God had a plan…
God bless your day!
The brownies look so good. How does your mom make her frosting? Not that I need to be making brownies, I’m trying to get moving in my old age
. I was asking my hubby the other day if I’m going to be 33 or 34, I’ll be 34 in May—how could I forget, I guess my brain is going, too. Ha Ha
I’m trying to have more home cooked meals, too. I try to get supper stuff started when I prepare the boys lunch. It does make my afternoon more peaceful when I know what we’re going to have and it’s already started. I wish I had learned this a few years ago.
I enjoyed reading your post today. Have a good one.
Wow, you had a lot to get off your heart the day you wrote this post.
I loved every words of it…and read it to the end.
I TOTALLY understand the complications of cooking for a family…especially now, as a working mom. ;( Crockpots Rock…yet, sometimes I just can’t get my act together enough to even fill the crockpot! (sigh)
I don’t do dentists well either.
If I’m going to wear a bib- I’d prefer to be eating…not being doctored on.
Love the new banner pic!! Be well.-Cass
Great post! I have a cookbook that looks like that on the pages where the recipes for baking powder biscuits, pie crust, and pancakes are!! I feel the same way about the dentist and when I found out what the new prices were for cleaning I decided I could do that once a year instead of twice as I don’t have insurance for dental (the price of insurance is more than I usually spend in a year!). PS – I have a gap between my two front teeth but I never had it “fixed” — it’s just me! Your mother’s brownies look so yummy (wish I could read the recipe), and I also love your header.
You are BEAUTIFUL girl! Love the profile pic
Beautiful inside and out. Love this post, as I too struggle with mealtime. I have an empty nest now and it just gets harder and harder to get motivated in the kitchen
Would LOVE some new recipes *hint-hint*….feel like sharing? Quick and easy is my motto…more time to enjoy the meal than cook it, eh? Truly GREAT post Amber. Maybe I need to post again…I’ll put it on my “to do” list. Blessings for a great week!
You covered alot of ground in this post; Ha Ha! I read every part and enjoyed it. Hats are my life savers on bad hair days, I can’t believe how different you look with a gap between your teeth, and I wouldn’t worry about the age distance.God designs family spacing perfectly. Are you trying to tell us something?
There’s something about knowing one is not alone. I always tell me husband that I love cooking, it’s just that I don’t love it when I have so many other responsiblities. On the weeks I am resolved to cook at home, I feel I am in the kitchen all day long, and yes, when my husband walks through the door, I feel a bit aggravated. I don’t have a housekeeper, but I see restaurants as having a cook. Sometimes, it’s the season we are in. I am tired of feeling guilty over it. I have friends who are amazing at providing meals, three times a day, daily. In my home, it’s make your own breakfast and lunch and I “try” to cook dinner half the week. I guess I could be considered a horrible homemaker, but I do other things well. Oh, and my boys call me the barber from hell! Having good clippers helps, but I don’t enjoy cutting hair. I’ve done it for 15 years and now I finally pay for their cuts. Thanks for shairng!
Oh, have you ever considered adopting? I have three, ages 16, 15, and 10 and we have two girls, siblings, that were placed in our home 8 months ago, ages 5 and 1. I am 37. We took the domestic route, through the county, and our experience has been positive. The state provides an adoption subsidy, which is a tremendous help. We get about $1000.00 each month for both girls, until they are 18. I know a lot of people are led to adopt internationally, but we have such a great need here in our own country and it’s free. We didn’t have $30,000+ to go that route. Our girls were hand picked in heaven and fit so beautifully in our home. We love them as our own, completely, from the beginning, maybe even deeper. Blessins, Tami
Our Davy was born when I was 36! He has been such a blessing.
Great plan to cook. So many great family times around the dinner table, plus good nourishment! I think it is good to vary your time consuming meals with easy ones. There are a lot I can throw together in less than 1/2 an hour…which helps with nights that have…Bible study, Boy Scouts, or youth group and there isn’t a whole lot of time. Or soups and stews that do not take more than that to make…but you have to remember to start them in the middle of the afternoon!
Haircuts! Bob always cut the boys hair because that is an area that I dread! I am ok with a little trim but not a whole cut. Part of the problem is my guys all have a ton of thick hair…but it is so straight…it shows every cut. I can do a buzz cut with the hair tool, but that is about it. Bob’s hair is the worse, I tried and melted before the haircut was over. So he goes to the barber.
Well, that was an ouch for sure, but looks like an important fix! And it shows in your lovely smile!! I have sooooo much money sunk into my mouth, and you cannot see it! Nice white, weak teeth and tooth grinding makes for cracks, root canals, and crowns. Makes your repair look like a deal.
I too love cooking but at the end of the day it seems so tiring instead of refreshing! I’ve been on a mission lately to make it an easier process in my life! Adding the OAMC meals and menu planning have taken a load off! Each day in the morning I can start thinking about or prepping dinner and by the end of the day it comes together! I love homecooked meals, eating out is too expensive for us so we are around that dinner table most nights and when everything comes together easily, it’s a beautiful warm place to be!
fun post~ “old age” & babies? we’ll n about 10 years I plan on hitting mid life crisis & having another. That will put 11 years from L to that baby and 20 years between oldest and youngest. haha. no really kidding ( i think) but what’s age got to do w/ anything really
?
I want one of those brownies. Happy 19th Birthday to your brother! He’s a cutie.
I’m out visiting today~ oh your site is just gorgeous!!!
Darlin’~ you are so young~ don’t let age stop you from doing anything on your heart! I am 45~ and we are thinking of adopting another little girl~ I wouldn’t even consider it for the longest time~ but may God have His way~ I am now open.
Again~ really enjoyed your site! Tamy
@srheam -
we don’t have insurance either, so I know the “pain” you’re talkin about.
@gymbum20 -
doesn’t always happen though~ that’s why I try to invest in CUTE sweatpants!!
@pettybunch -
thanks for that last paragraph in your comment.. a special encouragement right now!
oh amber this post cracked me up because I could relate to much of what you posted. cooking verses baking….I much rather prefer cooking.. Then the upward basketball thing. The boys are doing it this year and we like the character, but it is a bit lacking in excitement. We are finding it is taking the “good” natural aggresiveness out of them. So..anyway they are at least becoming better characters…hehehe
Oh and the tooth thing it didn’t happen to me, but it sounds like something that would.
And the baby thing I think I will want more forever….they are just so sweet how can we not desire that. I would love to see you prego! I can’t help but hope it is God’s will for you!!
You are so cute even in a hat. I think I don’t like you for that!
Love ya,
cara
ps what is the site they are posting your blog on?
Your just a BABY, Amber. LOL!!!
Don’t sweat the small stuff..He makes everything beautiful in His time.
@jessnboyz -
ha! yes, I hear ya… I kept doing that last year – - asking Shayne, “Am I going to be 34 or 35??”
The frosting is a buttercream and super yummy~
1 stick of butter w/ a pinch of salt – beat well.
1 heaping tablespoon Coco…
then add confectioner sugar {I usually use almost a whole bag}
and milk until it’s the right consistency.
of course, you can make a wonderful white frosting too by just omitting the Coco~
@myhopeisinjesus -
here’s the brownie recipe~
2/3 cup flour
1/3 cup cocoa
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup brown sugar
mix dry ingredients – set aside.
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup vegetable oil
beat eggs – gradually stir in dry ingredients. mix well
pour into square greased pan
Bake @ 350 for 20 – 25 minutes.
ps. i posted the frosting recipe above! some ppl like them best w/out the frosting though.
LOL exactly, cute comfy clothes is perfect!!
jim taught me how to cook. he is a far better cook than me. i try. however, i DO enjoy baking…which is usually because baking means “sweets”.
i think you will recall jim’s recent haircut. i had never cut hair before that. he threatened me to leave his hair grow long again….if i didn’t cut it. (he doesn’t not want to pay to have someone cut his hair). so…..i’ve got the job now. a job i do not like either.
where did you get that plastic cape? i need one of those. and i had to laugh so much about ben…playing basketball…not being aggressive enough. i recall telling jim the same exact thing that you penned. our girls just couldn’t switch gears from being NICE and SWEET to being MEAN and GRABBY on the basketball court.
LOVE you site….as always! what a FUN person you are!!!!
Now THAT is quite a blog! Amazing how much family history can go on in such a short amount of time.
And, may I say “THANK YOU” on behalf of the many husbands who do a lot of work out of the house for the wives who DO a lot of work INSIDE the house, for this comment ….
“…when that 6 o clock rush of daddy’s coming home, get the house picked up, change from my sweat pants, stick on some deodorant and be standing in the kitchen all pretty and wifely looking, with something yummy in the oven, trying not to look cross eyed with frustration when he walks in the door!!!”
Bless you.
There are many stay-at-home wives/mothers who do very little during the day – “kept women” in many respects.
There are many stay-at-home wives/mothers who do the world for their children, but forget their husbands.
You obviously do both.
Again – bless you and “Thank you!”
I’m right with you girl on so many of these issues… cooking, haircuts, babies…
I do think i’m starting to like cooking better. Vange is not a picky or big eater but some of our boys are a different story and I ‘m enjoying seeing my food being devoured. I’m a big fan on sitting down as a family to eat and letting the days happenings being our main focus. Tonight that included two spilled cups within about 5 minutes time.
I’m up and down with the whole baby thing too as I’ll be 40 this yr…. did i really just say that? I really feel 30. It’s something I talk to God about a LOT and i’m grateful HE knows our situation and desires and knows our limits and has a perfect plan for our family. The Haiti orphans are really on our minds a lot these days and we’re praying about that. So yep, not sure what road God will take us on… but I do know, I want him, to speak into our lives and to follow when HE says do this or turn left or go there. To live with Hope and Passion and to persue the dreams HE places on our hearts.
Blessings to you Amber as you live the life that was meant just for you.
This is hilarious! I’ve been meaning to ask you about your nails! Didn’t they tell you SOAK them off:?!!!
I’ve still got mine. I put them off for years because of the fill in expense but I think I’m hooked now. They say (whoever “they” is) that you can go three weeks between having them filled in but I can’t go a day past 2 weeks because it drives me crazy.
I’m with you on the cooking thing. Though now is not the time for me to promise any better meal planning! I do need to get better at that…..my excuse is, “I would love to cook if that’s all I had to do!” I’m not even sure that’s true anymore!
Loved this light-hearted post! It made me chuckle.
Stacey
Oh and 17 years between siblings is nothing!
We’ve been snowed in (AGAIN) and I was just thinking today that some pink tulips would cheer up the house! You know I’m with you on the dental trip! Hate ‘em!
Love The Post! The colors are beautiful! You look like you are 26 and healthy enough for more kids! I am 35 and we would love to have more children…I enjoy a lot of thing s in life, but motherhood is at the top! LOL
You’re still a spring chicken. Enjoy!
another great blog, Amber! Loved the dentist story!! and the cute new photos you put up top of the kids—-the ‘valentiney’ ones!
wow, does that chicken noodle soup ever look GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!
Amber, Would you mind posting your brownie recipe on your blog?? It looks delicious. Thanks for your inspirational posts.
Great cookbook, my Mom has that one too. I love the feeling of a great meal cooked, and on the table. There is something so fulfilling about creating something delicious out of plain ole ingredients. Makes me feel satisfied in my soul to serve my family something they all ooh and ahh about. The only problem with liking to cook and eat is the trouble of not eating too much and finding myself trying not to make every delightfully sweet thing I see. I’ve really been into making large batches of what ever I’m cooking so that I can have the leftovers for the next meal or the next day. Even cooking extra meat makes the next meal a breeze, or cutting up a large salad that can be used the next day. I love winter cooking….lovely soups with a salad and a good muffin makes a cozy easy meal. Have fun feeding your gang! Jess
I also have that cookbook and love it. It has so many great basic recipes in it. I also love Taste of Home magazine. I am opposite of you though, I’d much rather bake then cook. I love to make things look pretty. I always find myself in some time consuming recipe because it looks “cute” or fun. Once in awhile I will get in the mood to cook a big meal. I have a lot of one dish recipes and crock pot recipes because like you I simple do not have the time to do all the prep work. The key to it I think is actually doing the meal plan and having the ingredients on hand. It is so frustrating to not have any idea what to cook and then have to run to the store to get what you need all the time. Since I have started doing a meal plan it makes cooking for me a lot more enjoyable. Some people I know even theme out their week and have Italian nite, Mexican nite, Leftover nite, etc…
Loved your pictures especially the sand castle brown sugar. That is a good idea with the biscuits to roll the dough out thinner. Do you then bake them for less time?
I am the same way about the dentist. I have used the extra expression before also that I’d rather give birth then go to the Dentist so I completely understand. That really stinks about the price. I love that he waited till you were clamped in with the metal thing in your mouth before he tells you this. He knew you wouldn’t be able to get away very easy.
I love Brandon Heath! He has so many good songs. I always love listening to your playlist when I am here. I am always here for awhile because you always have such great posts that I feel like I have to leave big ol long comments. LOL
Having a little “afterthought” in your family could be a very good thing. Marla was born 5 years after we were “done.” Had gotten rid of all evidences of baby furniture and things. Four kids…two boys, two girls..perfect. Unlike you, I didn’t really want more kids necessarily and lets just say there were lots of tears when “the rabbit died.” But can I tell you, she has been a wonderful blessing to our family. We named her Marla Joy…Marla is taken from the Hebrew mara which means bitter…and joy is, well, obvious! My bitterness really did turn to joy and we can’t imagine our family without her. She’s 18 now, all grown up. She’s been a precious gift. I hope you get one too. {{{hugs}}}

@Suzyquekau -
thanks so much for sharing that~ what a precious story. i’ve met many “afterthoughts” that are obviously the sunshine of their home!!
Amber. Thank you sooo much! Im going to make this for my kids tonight.
@blueberrylane -
i should have said that i usually double the recipe.. if not, it only makes a small square pan size and it doesn’t go very far.
Don’t know that you are lacking for comments after getting 60 of them on this post…but here goes anyway. Besides have a love of books in common, I think another thing we have in common is that we tend to be long winded. That is a compliment, btw. I also would rather cook than bake. Seems like I don’t quite have that natural knack for baking. But I keep trying. I agree that sitting around the table and eating a home cooked meal as often as possible is really important! Oh, and one other thought. Can you change your color scheme on your blog by any chance? It is very hard to read the black letters against this dark brown background. Pretty please?
I good read! I am glad you got your toofies fixed in spite of the price. You have such an amazing smile! I was so bad at cutting my hubby’s hair that he does it himself now! (Just a hint! LOL!) I do have to help a little with the back, but that’s no sweat.
I loved your dentist story! I actually love going to the dentist- I love the smooth, clean feeling after I get my teeth cleaned!
Well, I’m sure you can guess how I feel about having kids past 35- I have had two past 35 (so far) and I wouldn’t trade them for the world. I’ve had a couple of people ask why I wanted to have “so many kids” (I’m thinking- I only have 6!). My answer- ”I’ve never met anyone who said they wished they hadn’t had the children they have, but I’ve met many, many people who have said they wished they’d had more”. I love seeing pictures of you with your younger brothers- just a glimpse into the future for my kids!
I remember those brownies!! lol I still think back when I was around 15, your mother put on an etiquette class for us girls at the church. She taught us the proper way to sit, walk, act…ask her sometime. Too funny.
Love your post!
Love that song by Brandon Heath too.. He is great!!
Tried your mom’s brownie recipe today – YUMMY! Tried it topped with a chocolate (mousse-like) cream (1 c. whipping cream, 3 T. cocoa, 1/3 c. powdered sugar – whip until thick) - oh my land!!!!! A must try duo next time you make the brownies :o)
In regards to your meals…I consider myself a pretty ”proficient” homemaker, but I’ll tell you what gets me so many times…that 6 o’clock rush that you mentioned – which leads to the Wendy’s rush you later spoke of! In one way or the other, the day was packed with so many things and dinner was the furthest thing from my mind at 7am (while I’m making BREAKFAST)! What eliminates those last minute runs to Wendy’s (or any other close at hand food establishment) is a dinner menu. If I don’t make a weekly menu, I can be sure to spend unecessarily at the fast food joints.
I take Thursday’s to take suggestions and think together a weekly plan for our meals. I go to the store and buy exactly what I need for those meals, during that week, on an insanely LOW budget of $50. Not something I LoVe to do, but it’s necessary – especially right now with hubby still out of work! If a week passes and I don’t make the menu, everyone in the house knows…”mom didn’t make the menu this week…”
Just my pocket change on the subject – it works for me!
Boy, that dentist story got me! What an idiot to wait until you were all hitched up and ready. Makes me MAD when things like that happen, becaue I probably wouldn’t have had the nerve to leave either. They count on that. Grrr.
That is very cool that you have a 17 yr younger brother! Always neat to hear that.
I hate to cook but I can read— HOpefully your theory will work for me too. You seem like a really great mom so if you have more kids they will be lucky!
I’ve been cooking a lot more recently, in an effort to lower our grocery budget – and you are correct. It’s a lot of work!! I had forgotten…..
And, you are still a spring chicken, my friend! I had my last baby just before turning 41…..see the possibilities! May the Lord grant your heart’s desire, my friend.
You soooooo do not look like a boy in the hat!!! And 36!!! I turned 39 in December…i feel a year of dread ahead! I know it’s just a number but man….
And lucky Shayne and poor Joey, as soon as I get home everyday, before I even start cooking I put on sweatpants!!! :O LOL or pajamas…whichever is closest when I walk in the door. I do not love “real clothes”.

ugg! really?? ya know.. we have 4 computers in our house {cause the kids use them for their online school program} and my background color looks different on EVERY one of them~ i had it a lighter brown but it clashed w/ the border around the header~
i promise i’ll change it with the next header!! for now, maybe try highlighting the text to see it better, or read it in the subscription page… i do always enjoy hearing from you, so hope it doesn’t keep you away!
