The past month I spent what felt like an eternity sitting on the couch in my living room…
Reading.
Writing.
Schooling.
Watching tv.
AND…
Thinking of how much that room needed a good cleaning and re arranging.
So, when I felt some bursts of energy coming back this week, I set at it.
One particular area was really bugging me – -
I stuck the pumpkins here when I put up the fall decor but never liked them..
.. they’re too shiny or something.
Maybe I can take some spray paint to ‘em!So – Wanting something different for this space I decided to go shopping –
in my house that is!
A picture from the kitchen.
Some baskets from Kate’s room.
“Inspire” from the upstairs hall.
And the chair my grandma gave me from our room…
I like the look better now. Here’s before/after side by side::
I ended up moving the furniture around too – nothing overly drastic…
but just kinda gives it a new feel.
bEfoRe::side by side before/ after as you walk into the room::
and before/after across the room:: {just subtle little swap outs here & there}
It closes the room down some. But I like the cozy feel… seems nice for fall.“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”
I used to think that was my mom’s original quote, she said it enough when we were growing up.
I’ve since discovered it was actually Teddy Roosevelt.
But I’m grateful mom instilled that concept in me…When the urge to have a new look strikes, you don’t have to go out and spend money.
Look around you –
re arrange.. exchange..Sure, there’s a few bare spots in some rooms that need filled now.
That’s the fun of it though….
getting to find and figure out the “filler pieces.”
I’ve always been a huge Pillow fan.
I like lots.. in every kind of fabric and color. And they seem to be an easy way to change things up, or freshen a look..
I traded out the plaid that were on the couch for some others in our bedroom.
Grabbing a few browns from Kate’s as well.
She said she didn’t mind….
“It means less pillows for me to put on my bed each morning!”
The brown chair below has been in my life for as long as I’ve been alive pretty much..
I can remember coming downstairs as a little girl, early in the morning
and seeing my dad kneeling in front of it praying.
The springs are near shot, and I’d love to have it reupholstered..
It’s so special to me = like a piece of my dad.
Funny, when you ‘fix’ one area it seems you notice another….
Every time I’d walk in the living room all I was seeing was the big map hanging over the kids school corner – -
I didn’t like it.
But since they use it often I couldn’t take it down.I got to thinking if it didn’t look so much like a “standard U.S. map” maybe it wouldn’t bother me so much~
so I burnt the edges to try to give it a more worn look.
Almost burnt up Mexico in the process.. but, it’s still there!
So next time the urge strikes to have something new or different look no further than what you already have ~
ShOp tHe hOusE…
you might be surprised at the great things you find!

I love your creativity! I’m glad Mexico survived!
POOR mexico! I love it. it’s hard to get a real idea of what it looked like before in the photos…but i like it now..and it’s what i would expect for you…your house looks like you. earthy and real & pretty. hope your week has gone well. m
Love this post! I do the same thing and my husband will come home and look around. . . he’ll be very silent. . .then he finally breaks down and asks what is different! LOL. Your rooms look beautiful. You did a great job! ~Denise
You have such a pretty house!!
@mellibella -
yeah.. I know it’s hard to really tell what it looked like before. Or even what the whole room looks like together now. ha~
I just kinda pieced it together w/ the pics.
It’s my lens – 50mm. And I just can’t get back far enough to get it all in at the same time:)!
dear friend,
I have a problem. I shop my house everyday. I am constantly changing everything around. switch pillows from living room to master room. Move them back, trade them out for half, etc. I am constantly shopping my house. I think I am constantly changing things around since I’ve moved and lived in so many houses. How do I stop? How do I shop stores? I think I would like that even more.
from an addicted house shopper.
course kidding. but seriously fun post – I’m so with you on the shopping the house. always saves me money – though husband always says, “… has something changed? things look different again…”
blessings and glad you have some energy!
Alyssa
Lovely!!
Oh, I wish you could come over and help me decorate my house
. I love your decorating style. Yesterday I had a couple hours without the kiddos (yippee) so I went to a very cute decorating store in our downtown. I bought a new wall clock for $10 marked down from $86. It doesn’t work, but my hubby said he can fix it. I love good deals.
Glad you’re having a good day!
What a change comes about from moving a few pieces of furniture! It does look cozy, and I really like the new arrangement of photos etc. in the first few pics. Good work!
how pretty! i’m sure your family absolutely loves having such a cozy, beautiful home to enjoy.
You burned Mexico:000 LOL!!!
Your house looks so cozy!! I shop at home too and it’s nice when you can do it for free. This year has been ugh enough I had no mood to decorate for fall, I am rethinking it.
Well now I feel INSPIREd to take a walk through of my own house and see what’s for sale!
oh, i like it a lot! very inspring! our house is under going a major change that i hope to soon post about…shopping the house is so fun, and CHEAP! glad you’ve been getting soem energy back…just don’t over do it!
blessings on you this night.

FAbulous and cozy. I love it! And you’ve given me the decorating bug even though we just moved in this house two months ago. New ideas are always nice though. Thanks!
funny, I was just reminding myself yesterday of that very quote of teddy r. My mom used to say it all the time while I was growing up, to us kids. Seems like one of those quotes every mom says
I guess moving furniture must be one of those stages you go through? maybe? My mom used to move our family room furniture around about once a year. Now that we live in this house, and b/c of the flow of it, there’s only one place for all of it to go so now all she can do is change out the little stuff and decorate for the seasons
I love your burned map…it makes it so much more interesting and cute! Makes me think of a well worn treasure map.
BTW I love your house and all your decorating! It looks so lovely!
Hope you’re feeling a bit better! Hang in there!
Your always an inspiration!!
I still love the post you did about all the “winged and hanging” items in your kids room.
@resolved2worship -
hey! here’s a thought… how bout we start shopping our friends houses!? – we could trade and switch back and forth like crazy! and btw – wanna move closer!!
you think there’s counseling for people like us.
hee hee~
Inspiring concept to “rearrange.. exchange…” I like it!
beautiful!
i do the exact same thing…. it’s so much fun, We have a finished basement, so i’m constantly switching things up. Was great to see a small part of your house. i would LOVE LOVE LOVE to have a fire place mantel to decorate!! Thanks for the tour
ok, i just read some of the other comments. i’m game on shopping in your house and i’d gladly let you shop in mine
wouldn’t that be fun!!
LOVE your style Amber…..when can you come over and work your magic on my poor place? ;o)
Whew ~ I need some of that energy! Looks great ~
You have a beautiful home! I love the warm tones you’ve used to make it cozy.
Good Morning Amber, First I LOVE polkadots and your little girls wears the same shawl I have…Should we be in the same picture: two blondes with blue-white polkadots shawls: The young and the old girl hahaha
Second: How good that you are up and about. I love shopping around the house, but my problem is: my house is still crowded with stuff and the sentimental soul in me finds it so hard to get of rid of ti, but Iám getting there…slowly…
Do you sew the cussions yourself ? This is so nice, and cheap. We can go to the market in town and bye lovely fabrics to the season. It is so nice to teach your children sewing with the sewingmachine like this: the result is creative and fast.I love cussions: comfort and warmth to the room.
I wish you to keep enjoying your rooms like this, Amber and you’ll get better and stronger every day again.

lools lovely-u have a touch that beautifies!!! I was smilin to myself and wondering if having miscarriages turn us into redecorating maniacs : ) : ) I have been busy tearing my house apart as well!!! redoing the bedroom-sewing pillows-and getting ready to repaint and decorate my daughter’s room!! Your house looks JUST like potter barn!
thanks for this fun, inspiring post! and it’s all beautiful, before and after! =) Now, lets see what “shopping” I can do today…=)
SOOO cozy and I do the same thing too. God didn’t give women the gift of creativity for nothing.
So glad you are feeling some energy… i’m slowly getting there. Happy day to you dear friend.
I LOVE it! So, how many times have you walked into your living and crashed into your newly positioned couch?
) Your decorating style is beautiful! I wish you could help me with mine. What would you say your style is? Because now, it’s mine, too.
)
Beautimous!! I’m amazed at the creativity. I have a map/globe crush. I’ve always preferred old ones but what a great idea it is to burn the edges! Never would have crossed my mind! Love your “Daddy chair”. I’ve got something similar from my Grandmother that is priceless to me. Speaking of her, (and moving furniture around) at the spry age of 99, she fractured her back MOVING A SOFA. Can you believe that? 99. SO, the lesson is, move things while your young but please stop when you hit your 90′s!
Hope you continue to feel more and more energized every day.
Stacey
LOL. Love this. And so pretty. I love your style. Looks fabulous! Very inspiring, YOU are!
Shopping the house.
I never knew how to label to my…uh…problem.
So that’s what it’s called?!
Everything looks lovely! You made me laugh pretty hard over almost burning up Mexico. I can just envision the whole map in flame…it would be one way to have an excuse for not putting it back up on the wall.
I love the Teddy Roosevelt quote.
Looks wonderful. Gld you’re feeling better. Take it easy – don’t over do!
I’m smiling. I did the same thing as you a few weeks ago. I changed the fireplace around a bit (things on the mantle) and moved pictures around on the walls from different rooms.
I was looking at our school maps on the kitchen wall last night and thinking . . . (!!!)
I also bought new pillows for the den sofas. Cheap ones ($5 each) because I wanted something plain, but in totally different colors. I’m thinking of painting the red den walls a warm yellow/gold.
THEN, in bed this morning, I was thinking of moving the den furniture around so the sofa would face the fireplace like yours. It tightens up our space, too, but I like the coziness around the fireplace for the colder months.
We’re two peas in a pod, Amber!!!
Well, aren’t I just a talking head this morning???!!! I talked about myself and didn’t say anything about YOU!!! So sorry!
I like the changes you made. I love the pictures hung diagonally. I love your glass doors and wide baseboards (actually, I *envy* your wide baseboards!). I also like the way you stagger and stack your photo frames. We have dark wood furniture, like you, so you KNOW I like that, too. Your house looks LOVELY!!! Very cozy and inviting for the cold months that are coming soon.
I’d like to shop to shop your house too:))) It looks very homey and sweet!
wanna come sit on my couch for a while?
think if I “shopped” our home I’d only come up with ladybugs or little people toys… can I come shop your house?
I love all of your Home Decor! You did a great job. I especially love all your pillows. This was a great post to inspire you to do something with what you already have.
the changes look nice. it sounds like home shopping is a popular thing. ^>^ I’ll have to give it a try!
what a “homey” home! a down-right cozy space! i just LOVE home decorating sites. and ideas. “shop at home”. love the concept! pulling the furniture in close for winter is a great, cozy idea! i too am a comfort person….LOTS of pillows! i keep sewing different covers for mine. easy, pillowcase-type sewing.
your site is always such a joy to visit, amber! i. love. it.
i love to do this, too! just makes us feel better to change stuff around a bit. my best friend/neighbor calls me all the time to come over and help rearrange her furniture and stuff all over. gets those creative juices flowing! and in my house, tom rarely notices anything i’ve changed….unless i don’t want him to. haha!!
Looks quite cozy, good for you! My husband bought me a new coffee table, and I’ve loved making it pretty with my fall decor. Your brown furniture is great, I’m hankering for some deep dark chocolate brown sofas, new lamps, and lots of fun pillows. Not to worry, I won’t go out tomorrow and buy it all, but you can imagine I have my eyes wide open. It’s fun to be queens in our castles and make it a peaceful and a feast for the eyes kind of place, love that part of my job. Happy to hear you are feeling some energy flowing thru your veins again. Blessings
@MaeIBeSunny -
yeah.. I think we’re on to something there.
@Becky -
a friend and I were just talking about this the other day and I was asking her, “what do YOU think my decorating style is??” I really have no idea to be honest ~:) I just buy things that strike me..
she was asking what I feel “drawn” to~? Hmm… even there I don’t think I could really define it – - I like the simplicity of country – but country is not exactly me. And the clean lines of traditional – but then again, I don’t like to be “traditional.” ha! French country appeals to me a bit.. I like the feminine touch. And there’s always something about modern that’s intriguing too..
now there. wasn’t that helpful!!
if anything I’d say just buy what you like~ you’ll be amazed how it’ll all go together some way or another.. because it’s a reflection of YOU.. and that’s what a home is supposed to be! even if something doesn’t make sense to anyone else – like my burnt map!! ha~
Amber, I love what you’ve done! I do the same thing! My house is open, so come and “shop” anytime! I’m wanting to clean out, now that we’re in the middle of this remodel!!! Lovve, GAil
Your home is gorgeous and so welcoming…………please come do mine!!!!!
Your home looks lovely and very similar in style to your website! Is it always so clutter free, with three kids? I’m impressed!
OK…LOVE EVERYTHING! You. Go. GIRL. I “shop my house” all the time! I call it “free” decorating. And when you buy in neutrals mostly, everything fits EVERYWHERE. Isnt that cool? I am also a LOVER of pillows…drives my husband batty sometimes
But, its a great way to mix it up with out investing too much. Blessings, and Hope you’re having a fabulous weekend with family!
what beautiful comfy spaces you have created!
love the idea of shopping your home
I will have to try that very soon
glad you are starting to feel stronger
I loved some of the quotes you shared in your last post..really spoke to me
thank you for being real and sharing through such hard times
I love your decorating style. Beautiful before and after!
Hi! I see you didn’t open you “It is Well With My Soul” post for comment, but I wanted to offer that I agree with your thoughts. I help present a hymn sing service in nursing homes each Saturday. Even though, and perhaps “because”, I sing these favorite hymns time and again, they do open my heart toward God. The words are rich and powerful – particularly the ones the resonate with life (such as “It is Well”) and those that have verses drawn directly from Scripture.
You and you family remain in my prayers for comfort during this time of sorrow, and your body is in my prayers for full restoration and healing.
Looks great! Of course, I thought it looked wonderful before, too. I have no eye for decorating, and no money to spend, so I have to confess I really don’t try.
And shopping my house wouldn’t produce much, I don’t think…
