  • {a little beach in a bottle}

I’m not an artist. I’m more of a doodler.
Even my stick men somehow turn out looking deformed.

But for some reason all my kids have this huge love for art.

So recently I bought a role of butcher paper to cover the kitchen table with…
found a wooden basket at Hobby Lobby for half off..
some cute little buckets in the dollar aisle at Target…
and set up a permanent place for them to be able to color and create.

At first I wasn’t sure if the “new look” was just going to be cluttered and messy.
But actually I’m really liking it – It’s Fun. Bright. and Springy!!

And even I’m enjoying doodling there from time to time. :)

Pretty flowers and sweet treats add to the fun..

    = = ~ = = ~ = =

Not long ago while walking in the woods, Emma found a little bottle…
she started carrying that thing everywhere.
    Putting anything and everything inside.

One afternoon last week she came to me and asked,

“Tan we doe det sum beach ta put in dis?”

Her crazy ideas and impulsiveness is something I identify with. :)

So since the older kids were still working on school and Shayne was home early to stay with them…
just Little Bits and I set out to “det sum beach” 15 minutes or so up the road at the lake.

It was a little chilly… but the sun would pop out from behind a cloud from time to time making it pleasant.

We dug a bunch of big holes and filled them with water…
buried each others feet in the sand…
    chased the seagulls…
twirled until we were too dizzy to stand up..
and huddle down close together when a gust of wind would whip up and give us goose bumps.

When my energy began to run out and hers had still a long ways to go yet,
I sat on the cool sand and watched. and smiled. and laughed. and marveled at my girl.
Her enthusiasm and spirit and sweetness.

And every now and then she’d come and sit beside me…
with arms wrapped around her legs that were drawn up tight to her chest.
    And we’d talk.
    Just the two of us.
    All alone there.
    About all kinds of things.
    About whatever we wanted.

I think this past year especially I’ve so realized the key importance of communication in parenting…
And that it’s about much much more than words.
    It’s listening…
    Knowing when that’s all that’s needed…
Knowing when we need to say something..
Learning that what we say isn’t nearly as important as what we’re living…
which is what our kids will believe far more than what’s coming out our mouths.

Shayne was telling me just earlier today that statistics show that only 30% of our communication is based on words!

Later that day as Emma and I drove home I kept glancing back in the mirror at my bright pink cheeked, rumpled hair little girl..
who was now very quiet. and very tired.

I thought of future days to come…
of talking and sharing and communicating.
When things would be a little more serious than how clouds stay in the sky and why purple is the best color ever!
And I found myself whispering a prayer that she would always know… that all my kids would…
and above anything, truly feel that there is that open invitation – the ease and freedom to come plop beside mom and just.talk.

I came across this verse in my Bible yesterday and even though it was all underlined with notes jotted beside it..
I still had kinda “forgotten” about it.

But I love it. And so feel it echoes my number one desire to see fulfilled in my kids lives~

“That you would love the Lord your God, and obey His voice.
And that you would hold to Him alone: for He is your life… ” Deaut. 30:20

I want to write it out on something and hang it up somewhere in the house so that I won’t forget it again. :)

    amber.

  • Having nine kids~ I treasure those times alone with each of them~ even when it’s just a quiet time with no words~ just love~ and knowing.  ~and I love Emma’s little bottle of beach.

  • Love the verse~

We have those same little buckets and I put markers and crayons in them too!!! LOL great minds think alike! the butcher paper idea is fantastic too, hhhmmm might have to go get some of that!

  • Oh, I love this post.  I wanted to reach in and color/draw (actually doodle:) along with you all!  (Oh, and maybe snitch some M&Ms :) .  Love your “beach in dat bottle”!   I’ll have to write down that verse too!!

  • The tales of your youngest always capture my heart. There is something so incredibly endearing about her!

I admire your willingness to jump on the opportunity to spend one-on-one time with your little girl. I’m sure she really loved the time with Mommy!

I also absolutely love the idea of a doodly kitchen table! How very fun and versatile!

  • The art table is a great idea…. the sweets and flowers added beautiful pop.   The vs is beautiful.  Thanks for sharing.

  • I LOVE your doodling idea! And I have to agree with Emma that purple IS the best color EVER! ;)

  • If I could bottle the beach everyday of the year, I would, not that I don’t live there anymore. It would be like bringing home, home w/ me. ~ lovely sweet times w/ just one kid at a time- I LOVE those times. I had Shelton on the job w/ me this evening and I always enjoy when I can take one w/ me too. We love out paper table here at our place – your’s is pretty! Our’s looks a bit more boyish haha! Tonight we ate out and the tables were paper like that too – I love to draw and I find I do it more than the kids do when we eat there… sometimes the kid in us never grows up.

have a wonderful week ! looks like some spring is coming your way!

  • I should spell check before I click submit.

  • I am blessed by your heart’s desire to communicate with each of your children – I see it in your posts all the time.  I believe with all my being that time spent wooing your children’s hearts, almost as one would a prospective mate, is what makes the biggest difference in what happens during those teen + years.  Folks often think being the perfect parent makes that difference, but I know that is not it.  While Bill and I do not have perfect children, we had a wonderfully harmonious home, Godly children, and amazing relationships with our 3 adult kids.  All this from a Dad who had anger issues, a Mom who can’t manage to keep anything tidy or organized for even a pair of minutes, and such a lack of finances that we have more than a few times been the beneficiaries of the church’s benevolence committee!  Time spent loving what they love, hearing what they say and caring about it, and showing them Jesus in everything will do more for your family than all the education, Bible classes, and specialized lessons ever will.  I’m sorry to go on & on, but I was thrown back to long ago days spent with my kids standing on their Daddy’s trailer backed into a small lake, Snoopy fishing poles casting out, reeling in – catching nothing, but having a blast!  What a blessing to see another young Mom sharing that kind of time with her babies!  May God’s blessings be sent back to you pressed down, shaken together, and running over!

  • Cute, cute! Is the beach still in the bottle? :) What is it about that age when they load up, store, up, collect such greatly endeared treasures… then put them in odd places for us to clean up and redistribute? :) Fun memories, though…

  • My daughter Bri and I want to come doddle at your art table now!

  • she is getting sooo big and beautiful!

  • I love your art station, what a great idea.  Emma looks so cute enjoying her day at the beach with her momma!  It’s funny how the little things seem so big and special to our babies.  My guys love the beach and collecting rocks, shells and sea glass.

  • She’s so adorable! I hope Damon wants to spend time with me like that when he’s older.

  • Hey! Maybe you are not so great at drawing stick people, but you are SO creative with ideas and words. You paint some lovely thoughts with words, my dear! How special that you had a day with Emma! She is a treasure. Communication is so terribly important. I remember when my children were small, and I would be kneeling by their beds to hear their prayers. Hannah tended to go on and on and on and on and…. well, you get the idea! There were so many times when I was weary and almost falling asleep, and I wanted to poke her and tell her to hurry it up, but God always kept me from doing that. He let me know that He very much enjoyed Hannah’s rambling prayers where she told him about the bug she stepped on that had green guts, or that Katy picked a scab and it was gross, etc.! LOL! He reminded me that she should ALWAYS know that she is welcome to tell Him everything about her day.

  • Emma is getting so big! Her little face is changing.
We have no drawing talent around here but we sure love it! My girls especially.
I love talking times with my kids…precious.

  • Love, love, love Emma’s bright shirt!
I wish I would have thought of butcher paper during the winter months when the kids were stuck inside and got bored easily. I babysit almost every day of the week, so I might still get some paper to keep them occupied on rainy days – was just saying this weekend that I need a new tablecloth :) ha Don’t mind if I steal your creative idea do you?? Too bad Hobby Lobby is a couple hours away though :(

Noticed your new header has a pic of Easter eggs – can’t wait to color some next week! Plenty of egg hunts this weekend already – kids are begging to go.

Praying for you Amber – have a blessed week

  • I read this last night, late, when I should have been sleeping. So I am back here this morning with a big ole’ cup of coffee…;p

It really is so very much more than words, isn’t it?! love how you put all that…a good reminder that My Life is my loudest voice…

Love the drawing and doodling and little Target buckets ( did you get those the other day?! with powder? ) and Emma…
I looked up that verse…I already had it underlined with a little note around it…but I had forgotten it. I felt inspired! and copied your idea!
It is hanging on my fridge as well as each child has it pasted in their little “Pillow Journal” that I write in.
I want to pray that verse for today, tomorrow and every breath that they take on this planet!
Thank you for sharing that scripture.

    <3

  • Me again.
I am having problems with xanga! It won’t let me “reply” to your comment…soooo…

    Me too about Target! :)
but, blush, nothing like scaring ya twice!
and, oh! good! about the powder! I need a rec!
    love you too.

  • I like your idea for the table, it does look Springy! This was a sweet post.

  • I love the art table. . . think I’m gonna have to do that for the grands when they come over to Nana’s house. . . thanks for a wonderful idea!!!!

  • wonderful art table idea!

love target dollar aisle…esp the fun little buckets they always have…

your inspiration is wonderful….i need it so much right now!

    thanks, amber! :)

  • beach in a bottle ~ I love it ~

  • Last fall I found a wooden basket/container with different compartments at an antique store, and filled it with art stuff.  It’s been the centerpiece of our school table this year.  I love having, it’s easy clean up, easy to get to the supplies, and it looks cute.  Not as cute and pretty as yours though!!!  I like the paper on the table idea, how fun.

So only 30% of communicating is with words, hmmmm, that is interesting.  Emma is getting so big, she’s starting to look like Kate! I still haven’t sent out your box!  I know last week I said I would…..sorry!!!  I promise someday soon it will get there!!!  On the bright side, the kids have adding to it! =)

  • Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you, I LOVE your header!  How spring!!!  I love each little picture, it’s so pretty. =)

  • You oooze art Amber…just a different variety than drawing. The beauty of this post is one. Love the happy, cheerful, springy drawing table.

sweet times with your Emma. She is growing, and we so enjoy your Emma quotes. Love seeing your time together. It reminded me how important listening is. I do listen, but sometimes forget that I do not have to SOLVE anything. Sometimes they just want to talk, you know. Thanks for the reminder. How wonderful for Emma to be able to ask for some beach in the bottle and the time with you to go get it.

Great Bible verse!! blessings to you girl!

  • She is SO pretty! What a great experience for you two!

  • this post just makes me teary eyed, it’s so beautiful. I think the older I get, the more sentimental I become….your realizing how quickly times goes and how soon the things of life will be so much bigger for Emma…it resonates with my heart, and your verse; Awesome. Even tho’ I know I will screw up with my kids, and most likely, I’ll miss them in more ways than I want to even think of, it’s still my hearts desire to raise men and women for Christ….that they would love the Lord, and cling to His ways….

the paper on the table! what a super fun idea! where did you get the paper? my littles would adore that; they spend time every day coloring and drawing…some of those things your kids have drawn would make an awesome collage to frame!

love ya, and hope you are enjoying this springtime day!!

    ~R

  • I so wish I could have went with you….the ocean makes me realize how vast God is…..and powerful….beautiful post!

  • what a fab idea!!  beautiful girlie, pics, and thoughts….BLESSINGS!!!!

  • This was so lovely. What a perfect moment!

  • Amber – what a beautiful moment with your littlest one (at the moment). i can`t get over how as she grows she gets to be even more of a little image of you. i love that dress she is wearing in the picture…so bright and ready for spring to set upon her. i`m glad that the two of you could have those moments together. today as i sat in class learning about my style of teaching….i was thinking about the ability to be child-like as adults, and what makes it different than being childish. i still haven`t come to any solid conclusions on it yet, but i`m so thankful for young people (and little people) whose joy in the simple things of life and who say such profound and heart changing things..that i can`t ever imagine people not being able to learn from them. I love that your daughter specifically wanted to fill her bottle `with beach“ wouldn`t it be an amazing thing if we could truly bottle the beauty of time spent at the beach in a bottle. ah the peace and quiet, the sand under your feet, God`s beautiful sun shining down and the crash of water on the shore…i could live in that beauty for such a long time. i`m glad that God gives us those moments.

i also love the artsy place that you have created for all the people in your family to draw and create. i think it definately adds both a conversation piece and a place of expression to a very vital part of your home.

you are loved and lovely Amber, May the Lord continue to shine his light on you and Shane and your beautiful kiddos.

    janel

  • I was very touched by the story about you just picking up and going to get “some beach” with Emma.  I want to learn more and more about taking those moments. And you are an inspiration to me!  Loved the post!

  • Such a creative idea for the kitchen table. I have tried to protect our surface from marks by insisting the girls put a book under a piece of paper when they write. However, it was a cheap finish and the stain is peeling off the table, and I’ve kept it covered with a tablecloth. BUT . . . your idea sure is a great one and I may look into the price of butcher paper at Hobby Lobby. You’re perky way of holding the crayons, et al, is so neat!

I was looking at the pictures, here, of Emma, she sure is growing up and not such a “baby-looking” girl, anymore. It’s good that you have another baby on the way!!!

  • love the doodles!! such a fun addition to family life…

emma is growing so fast! these shots of her are precious. as are your thoughts on communicating.

i’m so thankful to have your input and influence in my life as i venture into motherhood!

    ~*

  • awwww what a sweet post. I love little Emma… she is too cute. <3 Glad you and her got to spend a little time together on the beach.

And I like your “doodle tablecloth” idea… cute. cute. CUTE!

    love you, sis~

    yls~

  • Art is big in our family too. It adds so much to life.

I love Emma’s bottle and have one similar to it in my bottle collection.

  • Came by off a rec. So glad I did. Wonderful all the way around!

  • @resolved2worship -

you don’t ever have to worry about typos w/ me.. i’m the queen of them as my husband so sweetly corrects for me after i’ve written & submitted every post! apparently in this post i had, “static shows….” instead of statistics. but hey, made perfect sense to me – - of course static shows!!! ;)

hope you’re having a great Sat.

  • @down_onthefarm -

it’s Revlon colorstay mineral finishing powder {wow.. long name} ;) and the color is Brighten~

  • @Elizabethmarie_1 -

don’t worry at all about the box.. save it for when we come up this summer!!! ;) i’m so horrible about mailing stuff too.. i still have a present for a friend who had a baby like 6 m. ago, and another friend who’s bday was in Jan. i don’t know why it’s such a process for me to get something in a box and get it to the post office.. it just IS!! so don’t feel bad~ you’re in good company.

and yeah.. i guess the communication thing is like 30%words, and the other 70% is tone, timing, body language, facial expressions, etc. interesting, eh?

  • @foreveranoatneygirl -

i found the paper at Hobby Lobby – they have brown and white and it’s 4.99 for a smaller role, and 9.99 for a larger one! i bought the smaller one and we’ve changed it four times this week and still have quite a bit more..

  • Hey Amber…..love your post….and your new header!  Thanks for calling yesterday.  Sammy and I were at the pool when you called.  Yes, we’re in Denver; have been all week.  We are all very sad that we were going to miss Jane Eyre.  It’s one of Whitney’s favorites and of course we know most of the folks in it.  We have friends that are getting the DVD.   We’ll get together with them and watch it (of course it won’t be live)….  :o (   I’m glad to hear it was wonderful….I expected nothing less!  We’re driving home tomorrow so we won’t be at church.  Have a great Palm Sunday!

  • You are to an artist! Your photography, writing, decorating, eye for turning something simple into something special, musical abilities, etc…, these are arts my dear!

What a special alone time with Emma. I remember those with my kids and cherish them. Now that they are adults, when I get to spend that one on one, same thing, same wonderful feeling at the miracle that God has allowed us to partake in.

Thanks for your encouraging words Amber…you help me feel stronger just by being my friend. Love Dawne

  • Wonderful pictures!  Glad you enjoyed the funnies!

    Have a great week!

    Mike

  • what a FUN easter-y post!  i LOVE your idea of turning your table into a creative outlet for your kids.  (& you)

there’s just so much inspiration from your cute colored tins filled with pencils, crayons, and markers.  i would definitely sit myself right down and create something.  this is wonderful!

emma is just too too cute at the beach….with her adorable outfit and braided hair.  <3 her little free spirit!

and your header?  <3 it!  the pic of you and shane is just beautiful!  you are glowing!

  • Beautiful pictures and your daughter is absolutely adorable!

    Have a great Tuesday!

  • What I love the most about this post is Emma’s “rumpled” hair. That’s how my 3 girls look more often than not! I love to read your posts when I get the chance though I’ve never left a comment before. You see, I sort of know your husband. I’ve been up to the Hutchins’ place in Ontario. I knew Blayne a little better…..all through my sister Michelle Williams (Krabill).

  • Your photos are absalutely gorgeous . . . your daughter is beautiful! Thank you for sharing!

  • Love the artwork. Enjoy every moment. What memories you are making with your children! Awesome!

  • @Ananomuse -

oh yes! I remember your sis very well.. she was such a sweetheart. tell I said hello next time you talk to her. and thanks for commenting – it’s always fun to know who’s out there reading!! :)
