Game On.

to persevere >Webster’s defines it as this:: to persist in a state, enterprise, or undertaking in spite of counterinfluences, opposition, or discouragement.
that’s the word that comes to mind when i think of the past few months of FOOTBALL practice for Ben…
this has been the first time we’ve had him play on a non-christain sports team – - and believe you me, the atmosphere is much different! tempers and sware words get flung easily. competition is intense. parents are downright aggressive. and coaches think they’re working w/ future NFL players!
more than once Ben has had tears brimming in his eyes ready to fall, yet bravely wiped them away and kept going…he’s run penalty drills not knowing what he was being punished for… has come to the sidelines ready to throw up from the heat… done bear crawls the length of the field with a very large coach, with an equally large voice, yelling at him the whole way… has had boys walk away and not show an interest in friendship… and worked harder than he’s probably ever worked in his whole nine years of life!
it’s not been an easy few months. practices 6 days a week. now 3… yet, through it all, never once has Ben even hinted at wanting to give up. QUIT! … if anything with each week he only grew stronger. more determined. more resolved.
once after a particularly hard practice shayne said to me as we went to bed that night, “that is such a good picture of the Christian life – - – so often you feel opposition on every side. even from your OWN team mates! you get weary. tired of trying. tired of trying to figure things out – figure people out. you can grow discouraged easily…. but… (and i remember the smile that came over his face here), if you’ll just hang in there! keep at it. keep doing what the Lord asks – - NOT QUIT – - then you begin to see how all these things are working FOR YOU – to make you a better player…. ”
(i love how excited men get in sharing a spiritual analogy related to sports!
)
actually, i think all too often we forget what we’re here for! it’s certainly not a life of ease. to never have to endure physical pain, have a feeling hurt, suffer injustice, or walk through a life-altering trial. WE’RE IN TRAINING TOO… training for something much bigger than winning a football game – - – it’s to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. but not just that… for the world to SEE HIM in us!
so – while we say “yes, that’s what i want!” we can’t be bulking.fighting.fussing.complaining over the very things that He is using to bring that to pass in our lives…
we must realize it’s “part of the game.” to know the power of His resurrection, we must also know the fellowship of His suffering. (Phil 3:10)

Saturday was Ben’s first game…each year they get to play the first game at Paul Brown Stadium – home of the Bengals.
as Ben walked into the huge arena i think he was glad he had stuck it out and persevered!!

so FUN to watch him … to see the team working together.. putting into play what they had spent weeks practicing. finally seeing some of the WHY behind it all!
WAY TO GO Benjamin!! even if you never tossed another football in your life – i’m SO PROUD of YOU – the person you are!! love you a million bags of cotton candy~

—————– ~
daddy decided it was time for this football player to get a haircut – and though he wanted a mohawk like some of the other boys on his team.. i talked him into something a bit more “normal.”
And the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast. (1 Pet. 5:10)

funny things the kids said to me recently::
while telling a boy on his team about some friends of ours that have 13 kids the boys said, “Whoa! those 2 people must really be in love!” Ben wanted to know what being in love had to do with having kids!!!

while eating mac n cheese tonight kate told me that was what she was going to serve at her wedding reception. i told her all the kids who came would love her!

and when climbing up the stairs the other day emma busted out crying. when i asked her what was wrong she pointed to her legs and said, “dey not working!”
Happy New Week to you all~

Wow! in this last picture Ben just looks sooooo much like his momma! What a handsome young man! And so much perseverance! Good for you, Ben! Loved the analogy too, A! ~~~Hugs~~~
@trulytaken -
i was JUST thinking of you…
calling tomorrow. message me when’s good time~
I like what you said that every week he’s grown stronger, more determined, more resolved–that takes heart! The analogy to our Christian walk is so true! Speaking as one who for a time became weak, lost determination and my resolve all but dissolved, I learned one invaluable lesson–that even in that state my God owns my heart and even when I thought I couldn’t “cut it” He showed me by his mercy and grace that He would restore me, give me heart and put me back in the game!
Loved this post! All my boys were football players so this brought back fond memories (a few wet muddy one’s too). All God’s best to Ben and his football season.
dear ben, you did really good. i’m proud of you. your the best.
i love you

–so – while we say “yes, that’s what i want!” we can’t be bulking.fighting.fussing.complaining over the very things that He is using to bring that to pass in our lives…we must realize it’s “part of the game.”–
So true! I loved all the pictures! Ben looks like quite the football player! Ben’s a tough one, I would have probably given up mid-way through

your sisters
what a heartbreaker he’ll be one day!! your kids are the cutest. the game looks fun. LOVE football! makes me wish i were a boy so i could be on a team too!! ha. :-}
and LOL to what your kids said. i think kids say the funniest things!
the only time I really enjoyed watching football, was when our son was playing….takes on a whole new meaning then, right?
Cute saying there, and nice haircut! I always think they look so handsome with a fresh cut…..=)

whoops just lost what I wrote – okay, going again!
yeah for Ben! I just saved a post w/ football around 6pm before leaving for practice this evening — looks like we’re in the same season of life eh?
what fun it is! And so neat for the guys to get in there and have some good fun and work hard! I’m sure Ben is loving that part ~ yeah for you getting those good action shots!
I’ve a boy I need to get ice on his hand now — he went to practice w/ an injury, played hard, and now in pain big time!
blessings on your week!
Isn’t this time of year great? I seriously love the fall and all the things that go with it. I love football even though I don’t totally understand it. I think I just love all the experiences of football the food, the insane people… He looks so cute in his football uniform, and I love the pictures. My son would be so jealous of him getting to play in that stadium. Sports do teach kids a lot of life lessons. We have some pretty great coaches around here (my hubbie), and the head coach of the school we participate in is a Christian so it’s pretty cool to see it trickle down. I prayed when he was younger about where to send him and that’s where the Lord led us so we are quite ecstatic about that. (we questioned if it was even a good thing to put him in sports, but he loved it so much that we did.) So, anyway long I know I just wanted to let you know how glad I am there are other Jesus lovers out there that put their kids in sports. Blessings friend, CARA
by the way we love Jim Brickman
oh how i love that pic of ben….walking into the arena! i love the analogys you used of football and our walk with God!
we would do good to remember that this life IS a battle! there’s a story of a little boy playing his first game of soccer. he went crying to his daddy and said, “i could do a whole lot betta if dem guys out dare didn’t twy ta stop me.” HAHA! how true to life!
yes! ben does look a lot like his mama. even from just pics, i can tell he is a kind boy with a precious spirit!
i enjoyed this post alot. as always.
WOW! Ben is only nine and he is already such a tough guy. Your husband is right…. the Christian life is very much like what Ben has been fighting through. If we could only learn to “suck it up” and stop whining over every little thing! LOL! ~~ I think some days I feel like Emma when I go up the stairs!
~~ Thank you for your encouraging comment! Bless you!
Very encouraging to read. Thanks for another great post!
While I agree with you that life is a battle, I am so grateful that I have all girls. I would make a horrible mother to a boy. I’d be out on the field with a bag of ice or Bactine & bandages every time my boy took a tumble!!!
Love It!! What a fine young man you’re raising. You’re doing a good job – you can see it in the faces of your kids. Keep it up!.! Good thoughts from your husband too*
I enjoy your posts.
It took me forever to get on your site ~ we are in a motel and our laptops kept kicking me off! Anyway, what a handsome young man is that son of yours! I was determined to find a way to get on here to say that!
Ben looks quite official in that uniform. I smiled to see how much bigger his shoulders look than his legs! Your family is precious.
Awwwww…..the pictures all turned out great!!!
That was a fun night!!! Too bad they didn’t win…. :-/ –next time we’ll sit in the right cheering section, too!!!! hahahaha
Love ya~

Oh the things your kids said at the end were hilarious! Tell Kate I’ll come to her reception. I love Mac n Cheese dinner! Your Ben looks like the perfect boy to play football. I”m sure he loves every second of it. Enjoy the season!!!
Your son must be thrilled to get to play football like that!!!
The things your kids said were so cute!
Here is your comment.
I loved the football analogy. It reminds me how much of a “fighter” I should be and not give up because I am weary, hurt, scared, etc. I think that it is so special that Ben was able to play at Paul Brown Stadium. How many people can say that they’ve played there?
The music on your site is great. Your selections are some of my new favorites.
You know, it would seem that you described my life story in the comment you left for me. It would seem that just as soon as I start getting to know someone better they leave. Or, if I know that they are leaving I try and spend more time with them right before they leave, which only makes their leaving more sad, because I then know what I am missing. Don’t worry, I’ll be back to visit. You all are my family.
I love the football analogy! Last night I was thinking about a particular year of my life where that’s exactly what I felt like. Can’t say how many times I WANTED to quit, how many times I thought I was too exhausted(physically, mentally, emotionally, and often spiritually) to keep going. And then, there God was right beside me always ready to give me the strength I need to keep going. No matter how hard it was, I’m glad I didn’t quit. I’ve learned a lot of things through that year, things I never would have learned if it hadn’t been for those struggles.
GO BEN!!!!!!
btw the haircut pictures are hilarious! in the first one he doesn’t look too excited about the haircut and in the second one he looks thrilled! was he excited about the haircut or getting out of the chair or both???
Amber, that is one handsome young man you’ve got there; I agree with the other commenter who said he looks just like you in that last picture! It sounds like his inner character has really been tested and strengthened with all those practices, and I know that is what is most important to you. You should be proud of him!
THANKS for sharing those things your kids said…gave me some LAUGHS!
@missions_on_mind -
he was excited to be DONE!! doesn’t like to sit still that long.
when he saw those before and after pics he said, “I look rather fat in the first one – and skinny in the 2nd!” i told him cutting off that much of his hair removed a few pounds!! : )
Hey A~ So nice to see all the things you are letting your kids do, what fun memories for them and for you. I love all the pictures of your kiddos! The analogy was very good, I do agree, those men really get it when it comes to sports, don’t they?! :) I know it is hard to let your children experience things “in the real world” for themselves. A few years back our D was the lead in a local theater production of “ My Fair Lady”. What an experience that was for our whole family! Going from the “Christian” community to the worlds standards (or lack of them) was pretty eye opening for our kids. When J. went to work for a heavy equipment co. in GA, again, he would come home and tell us stories about some of the guys he was working with and we were shocked at what really goes on sometimes… But later, each one of our kids have come back to me and said, “you were right mom, there is a big difference in God’s people and the rest of the world”. What’s sad, is that sometimes they see Christians act up and think the world has more to offer. Been there and done that too! Your family is so sweet. Keep up the good work at being such loving & supportive parents. Their are many rewards yet to come… Love to you today, Mrs. B
