  • How I {roughly} saved about 100 dollars…

When I was young I had a gap so wide between my two front teeth I would sit in school and stick my pencil point almost completely through it. Sometimes getting it stuck and then, getting in trouble with my teacher. Imagine a little 2nd grader, “But Mrs. Hennamin.. I couldn’t do my test. My pencil was stuck in my teeth!”

As a teenager I had the space bonded over. I remember the dentist saying it wouldn’t last forever and eventually would break down and crack through the years. He was right. It did. And once again I went in to have my gap filled… :)

I just had a random thought…. Remember in the movie, Anne of Green Gables, when Anne and Diana are chasing the cow! Anne sends a reluctant, prissy Diana to stop the cow from getting out on the other side of the field. And Diana, as she hikes her dress up over her arm with mud near up to her knees says oh, so unenthusiastically – “Alright. I have the gap blocked!!” hee hee~ I watched that movie so many times growing up. I loved it. A friend and I even dyed our hair red!

Well, earlier this week when some of the bonding fell off again, leaving a sharp jagged edge across the bottom of one tooth, I was determined to not go to the dentist to have it fixed! Amazing how you can be in that chair for literally less than 10 minutes and get charged the walloping amount of money you do  – making you feel you should atleast have a gold tooth or two to show for it! Beside, I really just flat out hate going to the dentist, or any doctor for the matter, and try to avoid it at all cost. But after a few days though of constantly sticking my tongue on it until it was sore I knew I needed to do something!

So…. I got out my nail file and went at it!!!

I think my face is in a permanent grimace now.
Not to mention one front tooth is shorter than the other!

But, the way I look at it is if I keep saving a bit of money here and there on my own medical repairs, someday I’ll be able to afford plastic surgery!! ;)

    = = ~ = = ~ = =

My mom read this quote to me the other day and it made me laugh…

What if the hokey-pokey is really what it’s all about?”

ya never know.. it just might be! :)

  • That was soo very bright of you, the dentist is my enemy! lol I’ll be ready for plastic surgery LONG before you are!

  • LOL – I am still saving myself about $400 b/c I refuse to go get two of my wisdom teeth cut out – wonder how much I could do with a nail file back there? LOL Love that quote btw – may have to steal it for a facebook status sometime.

  • Thanks for the belly laugh……..you crack me up!!

  • Medical repairs.
    LOL!
So what are you going to do with that hundred dollars that you saved?!!!
    You earned it afterall!

Oh my, thanks for the laugh!

    Hate the dentist.
But something funny and tooth related is what Jacob told me at bedtime one night.
“Hurry Mom. I need to brush my teeth. Hurry or they are going to rot right out of my head!!!”

    :)
    Love ya too.

  • You are SOOOOO far from needing plastic surgery girl!  I too have hit the teeth with nail file before I have to admit.  More for time convienence than anything.  Funny!

  • that’s pretty funny, i could not have handled the scratching noise but go for it! how funny :)

  • Ooooch!  Sounds like it would hurt!  :-/

  • Girlfriend ~At least the dentist has numbing medicine……. You crazy thing!!

Promise me you won’t ever do any “self” nips, tucks or enhancements. ;)

  • I need a wisdom tooth removed….any suggestions?  My insurance stinks, so I don’t have any immediate plans to get it taken care of.  But, if you have have a ‘cheap’ way to fix my problem, that won’t make me cry when I do it, I might even buy you lunch at Panera!  lol.  have a great day.

  • Eewww! That makes me grimace to think about. Funny girl you!

  • You are too crazy! I should just come visit you instead of getting my wisdom teeth cut out. I was supposed to do it years ago but am determined to wait until they are all the way through so that I don’t have to have them cut out – just have them pulled instead! ( :

Hope you have a great day – Mj

  • Yikes!  I’d really like an update on this one at some point.  LOL

  • lol….reminds me of fixing my braces by myself and breaking off brackets I no longer needed on my back teeth since my dentist was 2 hrs. away :)

  • @fwren -

IT DID!! i’d file for awhile then stop. file, then stop. shayne was sitting there saying, “you’re so nuts.” he’s right! ;)

  • @purpleamethyst76 -

haha! the update will probably read something like this… “Toothless at 35!!”

  • @CurrySparks -

:) i’ll take lunch, but i better keep my medical skills limited to myself!!

  • My husband and I are both “do-it-yourselfers! YOu would cringe to know some of the things I have come up with! I chuckled when I pictured you in front of the mirror with a nail file in your mouth sawing away! Oh dear! Hope if it gets any worse, you will go to the dentist. I know it’s not fun, and crazy expensive, but God will make a way.

  • I once tried the ancient medical practice known as “Ignoring the problem.” Turned out it was a abscessed tooth, which turned out to not be a smart move on my part. I’m sure you’re much safer with a emery board, but be careful. However, imagining your face while filing your tooth makes me laugh the hardest!

  • We’ve got to see pics of the once red headed Amber!

  • I can’t tell a difference! I’d do that too! <3

  • @bakersdozen2 -

    I’ve… I’ve done that before. ;)

  • You are one crazy gal….. and this was just hilarious.  I think tho we need more people like you.  :)

  • I’m crazy enough to do something like that! Of course, I *do* hate visiting the dentist for *any* reason, whatsoever!!! I thought you were going to say you bought some acrylic nail stuff and attempted to bond the hole shut on your own. Now, *I’D* do that, if I was sure I could match the color!!!

I’ve heard the joke about the “hokey pokey” and believe I have it written down in my file entitled, “What to read when I’m old and no one comes to call on me”!!!! I keep all kinds of funny things in one place and it’s always a hoot when I come across that file.

  • I always enjoy for post and this one was pretty funny!:)

P.S Did you get the bat out of your bathroom?

    Abigail

  • Ha! Teeth! And…you sure do not plastic surgery!

  • @chix0rgirl -

I’m getting each of you a canister of Nitrous Oxide for Christmas. ;)

  • That last is such a marvelous picture of you, dearie!

    But frankly, the very idea of a nail file on my teeth pretty much gives me the heebie-jeebies.  {shudder}

  • hehe…sounds like something I might try.  I remember when I was young, I had a gap between my front teeth, and I found a bag of teeny tiny rubber bands for braces, so I would put one around my front teeth, and they came together eventually…

  • Hahahahaha. You’re hilarious. :) Way to be frugal!!

  • funny story. XD i liked anne too growing up.

  • Oh, Amber, I am cringing in pain just thinking about it! Bless you!

  • Haha…what a great story!  I’m with you – I don’t like going to the dentist and doctor, too.

  • It was great reading your witty post…..Especially your mom’s quote!! LOL  :) I think I will write that somewhere….This sounds corney…but that was Hubby and I’s first dance together!  :) Oh my!

YIKES!!!!! I am still cringing with the filing!!!!   I don’t think I could have done it…I have goose bumbs right now just thinking about it!!!  lol  You are really serious about saving money!  :)   But I hear you…we just dropped a (buttt) load to have my hubbys impacted wisdom tooth removed!

Have a great weekend Amber…thanks for making me laugh this morning.

  • way to go ! Going it yourself it the way to go – unless you can’t do it yourself. haha.

I’ve always had teeth issues. Even after braces through highschool – I’ve still messed up teeth to show for it! Shelton just broke his front tooth for the third time this past week. Have to get him in for it AGAIN. It’s not file-able – poor guy. :)

  • i’m with ya.  with dentists.  and spending money.  now that you’ve admitted it, i too have been known to use my nail file to file a tooth.     LOVE YOUR REAL-NESS!!!!   (the pics of you and shayne are adorable!)

  • you are so weird!!! It is what I love about you!!

  • @Abigail -

yes, we did! my brother came.. since shayne couldn’t get soon enough.. it took him quite some doing. we got it out the window.. but I’ve had several ppl tell me if you don’t kill them they’ll come back!! : / maybe we scared him bad enough he won’t want to come back!! ;)

  •  Those are adorable pictures of your children. The feather headband in Emma’s hair is so cute.

  • I think I have about a $50000 mouth….  thank you for your sweet comments and prayers…Jason is having a very hard time but got through yesterday…I worry about his health..but he knows I am here for him…and right now all I can do is pray; for him..  Much love..charlotte

  • I am so behind in blog reading!  I read the first couple lines of this post the other day and then looked at the time and had to get off!  Now I’m back and just finished.  You are Hilarious!!!  And very frugal!!!  I’m sure absolutely no one is going to notice your shorter tooth.  I will point it out and laugh next time I see you just for fun though!!!  Just kidding! You are so beautiful it wouldn’t matter if you lost all your teeth!!! I’m glad you were able to take care of it on your own.  If I need dental work, I’ll come out to Ohio!
