  • {a few more feathers in my nest}

    Whenever I add something to the house –
    whether from buying it or just moving it to another space –
    that becomes my new favorite spot for awhile.
    A little space of happy that might not seem like a big deal to those on the outside looking in…
    but that’s the great thing about building a nest of your own.
    It’s just that – yours!

    A expression of what you love.
    A extension of who you are.

    And it doesn’t have to look pretty to anybody else…
    or even make sense.

    If you stick that feather in,
    stand back and tilt your head to the side,
    sighing contentedly at what you see…

    that’s all that matters.

    * * * * *

    Some of my favorite feathers I’ve added.moved.or gathered around here lately –

    Decorated for a bridal shower recently that left me with a ton of leftover votive candles….

    Such a fast and inexpensive way to add warmth :) to any nest.
    I loVe candles. and loTs of them.

    …a word of advice -
    buy ones that are ENCLOSED.

    that won’t burn the house down.

    just in case you happen to be like me and {might} forget to blow them out!

    * * * *

    I had bought this hook thingy for a few bucks not long ago but wasn’t sure what to hang on it.
    It’s not the sturdiest in the world and pulled off the wall easily, so I needed something light…

    I keep a little box that has junk scrapbook stuff in it.

    Sitting up late at night usually watching some old BBC movie or something,
    I’ll occasionally pull it out and start trying to create things.

    See- you might have new decorating items laying around your house you didn’t even know you had!

    Also, some of the little do-daddy-wacha-ma-call-it’s double as bracelets for the girls {and me} when we want to pull them down and wear them.
    Love just a simple ribbon tied around the wrist or ankle for a quick & “unusual” accessory.

    * * * * *

    I’ve had this chalkboard for a long time and have moved it from place to place…
    Now trying out this wall that separates Kate and Ben’s room and think it’s my favorite spot yet for it.

    I like being able to leave little messages on it for just.them.
    Kinda like our own mailbox of sorts.

    Chalkboards are one of the neatest decorating items –
    Simply writing on them can change the look!

    And if you’re like me and like change then, you’ll like chalkboards. :)

    * * * * *

    Some more re arranging of things…
    this time the kitchen wall.

    {before}

    {after}

    * * * * *

    I absolutely fell in love with this picture/ painting from Hobby Lobby for 5 bucks!!
    But the frame was all dented and scratched.

    With a little Sharpie marker though – I don’t think you can even tell!

    colored markers can make a great way to touch up nicks on things..
    w/out having to break open a can of paint!

    * * * *

    Of course, flowers are a favorite fluff in my nest – and often.

    I like putting them in non-traditional places….
    On the floor. On a chair. Verses the typical, in the middle of the table.
    It gives me the sense of something new being decorated when really,
    it’s just a vase of flowers..

    * * * * *

    Here’s a dresser I picked up out of the garbage a while back.
    Actually, it was my mom who really did the picking up.
    She was with me and when I saw this I spun around to go back…
    to which she jumped out and said,

    “Well I don’t have any control over your crazy driving that near got me killed right there…
    but you’re not having this baby before it’s time by lifting this thing.” :)

    Love my mom.

    I gave it to Ben as his project…
    I think he’s going to paint it with chalkboard paint and turn it into a craft dresser.
    With chalkboard paint we’ll be able to write on each drawer on the outside, labeling what’s in it.
    looking forward to how it turns out.
    I think it’ll be cute.

    * * * * *

    What have you been working on around your nest lately?
    Any new feathers you’ve picked up or even some of your old favorites?

    Would love for others to share.

    If you’ve written a post about it add the link in with your comment.
    It’s fun to hear. But even more fun to SEE. :)

    …and along the lines of finding inspiration from others I loVed this quote I read recently~

    “….it is not possible to ever imitate one person’s desires and imagine them your own. It’s just not, and I will argue that to the grave. We are all unique characters, and we share the same circumstances, but never entirely…. I am who I am and that means I am not threatened or intimidated by any form of imitation, because we’re all products of imitation. But please, please, take the time to ask yourself why it is that certain things move the Earth underneath your feet. If they don’t do that for you, they’re not really a part of who you are, but rather a fascination with someone else’s character. Make sense? Go find you in all this inspiration in the world. Go find contentment.”

    happy nesting.

  • that quote is wonderful!! goodness sakes. i love it. and your decor is so welcoming and homey! makes me just want to come settle in for a long visit. :)

    i’m still feeling out my style. it keeps changing, which i don’t mind—but i have some new/favorite areas of our nest. i’ll get those posted soon!

  • Love you style and feathers! I hope to sew some new pillow covers for the living room. I have some neat floral, vintage looking material that would lighten up my couch pillows…Crate and Barrel style. I need a bit of extra energy to get going

  • I loved this post! I love doing those little things to fluff our next too! I like that term! I just bought a dresser to paint for our school room and a friend gave me a table, so thats what I’ve been doing to Fluff our nest!

  • very cute ideas…so where are your belly pictures?  surely you have one by now ;) :)

  • YOu are very creative in your decorating!! It’s inspiring to try “different” things!

    Ha!! Love the quote from your Mom, sounds like my mom! Gotta luv em’ !:)))

  • Everything looks so pretty and cozy!  I haven’t posted on decorating in a while, but you’ve inspired me!  That chalkboard paint is so fun to use! Hope you’re doing well.  =)

  • Oh my gosh. That last quote….the last paragraph, I’ll be chewing on that for a while. That is a deep concept and one I’ve been thinking on just recently. Everyone’s inspiration comes from SOMEWHERE. And there are “fads”….even with creative endeavors……trying to avoid rambling! So I think I’ll stop and just chew! ;)

    Your feathers are adorable. I too, love chalkboard paint. I’ve been thinking about using it in a portion of the playroom. Wouldn’t it be fun to actually be able to draw on the wall?!

  • “move the earth underneath your feet”…. aaahhhh, love that description of living with passion and things that make you come alive.  Was thinking about that very thing today and could write a whole lot about it but I don’t have the time right now.

    I LOVE the way your house is so cozy and wow, such a touch of creativeness… you are talented and i love seeing how people bring beauty to their world in it’s own unique way.  Love the dresser and i think doing it in chalkboard paint is a great idea.  Didn’t see that before.

  • Love your feathers — I’m trying now to incorporate  a few of my mother’s things into my decor, which was already a bit full.

  • One more thing!  That picture with the lady for 5 bucks was at my Hobby Lobby!  I wanted it really bad, but I was buying too much other stuff, and couldn’t get it. So I hid it behind other pictures and thought, I’ll come back soon!  So I did, a couple weeks later, and it was gone! =(  Someone found it.  I did get a couple of other ones, and they were down to $2 by the time I went back.  The lady picture would’ve been perfect in my bedroom, but Jeff probably wouldn’t have appreciated her as much as me, sooooo, it’s probably fine I missed out. ;)

  • Your nest is nicely “feathered”, it looks so cozy and warm. Hobby Lobby is a great place to shop. Some of my favorite items have come from there. Lately I have been very content with my jolly little cottage and have made few changes since Fritz retired. Guess I find having him in his recliner as the best decoration ever!

    Lovely post and I hope you are doing well.

  • so charming, your abode is!!
    i love the warm tones throughout your house; looks oh so inviting!
    i ♥ hobby lobby, but, alas, we do not have one here…but, maybe that’s a good thing. :) for our budget anyhow. ;O)

    happy Tuesday!
    stay cool!

  • Amber,

    I really like the first song in your playlist, “Your Faithfulness.”  It is right where I am at right now.  I am grateful for a faithful God, especially during the hard times.

    Amanda

  • @peaceatthelake -

    oh, Amanda.. i only just heard. my heart so feels for you. that song was one that was such a comfort during our time of loss {and what we thought was loss with this one}.

    thinking of you extra hard. with much love~

  • What lovely nest!

  • Great pictures, your house looks cozy and beautiful!
    I looooove Hobby Lobby! About half the decorations in my house are from there, and the other half are from the antique store.

  • @ABAHM -

    sewing is something i wish i could do~ i’m fairly decent with a hot glue gun though. ;)

  • @goffandfamily -

    i just took some yesterday… i’ll have to see how they turned out. i’m not very good at self portraits and when you’re working with 5th&6th grade photographers it’s easy to be a bit out of focus! ;)

  • @Elizabethmarie_1 -

    ah, man. :/ when i got that they had 2 more and i started to get both just cause they were so cute and cheap and would make nice gifts… but ended up not. sure wish i would have now~ i would have sent one to ya.

  • gotta copy that quote.love it.
    pretty nest you have going on there little mother bird. love it too.
    needa keep moving.gotta pack.

  • @ToLiveLoved -

    if you like that one you’ll like this one too::http://aurajoon.blogspot.com/2007/03/what-you-can-cant-do.html

    love this girl. she’s cool and just downright adorable.

  • When I read this post and saw the photos, I knew my precious Daughter-in-love would love it – and she was the FIRST comment!!  She LOVES candles!  She is also creative and eclectic in much the same way you are.  Your home is so lovely and warm, and homey!

    Recently, we had my Daddy’s 90th birthday party, so we took the opportunity to feather the outside nest!  I was able to get some cushions for their swing and their double rockers, and we bought and moved plants around the yard and porch – it was so pretty and festive!  I’m not able to do much in the house because in my Mama’s demented state she gets agitated easily.  So I’m enjoying the beautiful outdoor space for right now!

  • @down_onthefarm -

    don’t forget the billy bob teeth! ;p

  • I love it! Your house is so neat and pretty! I’d go sit there and stare at it too~

  • hmmm… don’t think I have enough feathers… perhaps that’s the problem. :) well… whenever I acquire a few more I’ll have you over again to walk on my stove and counters… :) maybe with some nails… ;) had a good time with you this weekend… can we do it again? :)

  • wow, I love this post and your decorations! wowwww!!

  • You have such a fantastic decorating style!! ~ I love it!
    I’m really in need of some ideas. The way our house is designed there isn’t much wall space and I’m not creative enough to get beyond that road block….. :(

  • FUN, fun things! I love finding new things….makes being a homemaker, nest feather…er =) so worthwhile, and so fulfilling! I so like the contented feeling of putting something in just the right spot, makes your heart happy =). See you soon!

  •  I love feathering my nest.  I look at Country Living (which reminds me of your comment on my site…the ultimate compliment, !! Thanks)….for ideas b/c I am not as creative as you are.  What we are doing?  PUTTING IN HARD WOOD FLOORS in the l-room and our bedroom.  Tomorrow!  I’m so excited.

  • I like the pictures of the candles especially the close-up…blessings to you today!

  • Oh the feathers are flying in this house! I will have to post pictures of everything we have done soon.

  • That quote is so wonderful! It speaks of things I’ve been thinking of so much lately, since we’ve moved into a house that we own and are more free to “express” ourselves than in a rental. It’s such a freeing thing to do things (I’m thinking my home here) not because of what anyone does or doesn’t do, but simply because YOU lov it and it expresses you and your family. That is such  beautiful thing!

    And you have done a beautiful job with it! Your home is one that makes me want to come visit! Love the creative touches, but it still looks so classy. Warm, but not cluttered. Very tasteful, very cozy. I guess I just notice little details about homes/houses right now because I’m in the middle of it myself. :)

    And I’m sad, very very sad, to not have met you this weekend… :( Hope your time with everyone is just lovely!

  • I am loving your decorating projects Amber!! Please come do my condo!!!!!

  • Well, I love to look at your pictures.  I sometimes wish that I had the gift of putting together pretty things, but somehow my nest usually ends up more like a killdeer…just a scratching-together of whatever’s handy..and it’s hardly even noticeable.   I’ve tried a few times to buy cute little items, but somehow they never have that cohesive, satisfying look that so many people seem to achieve so effortlessly.  Sigh.  I guess I just have to assume that I have some other gift that I will discover someday.

    I haven’t read all the comments, but I just saw the words billy bob teeth up there!  My dh is quite famous in our circles for his!
