{marry him for his hair}
Yesterday at Ben’s football game Emma saw a boy from Ben’s team walking by and turned to me and said,
“Oh! I weally weally lub dat boy!”
“Hmm.. how can you love him, babe? You don’t even know him…”
“Well.. I just lub him hair.”
“I see. So it’s the hair is it?”
“Yep. I fink that’s how I’ll marry someone fur not … if dey hab tute hair.”I better make sure Shayne adds that to his list of requirements to date his daughter someday-
“Must have cute hair.”

It was a cloudy, damp fall afternoon here.
Late in the day the clouds broke and some sunlight came spilling through the windows.
I was taking a few pictures of Reese by the back door and Emma sat down beside her…
I liked how the light reflected on her face, so turned to snap some of her too.I’m not a great photographer in the sense that I really don’t know what I’m doing~
I’m constantly just turning and clicking things and seeing what different modes or settings will do…
so each time I happen to get some shots that sorta capture what I was trying to I find myself a bit surprised and… happy!
I like the artistic side of photography but hate the technical.
course, I know to be better at it artistically you gotta know the technical stuff.. it just gives me a head ache is all.

Something that I’d kinda forgotten all about was sponge curlers…
Remember those things?? The torture of trying to sleep on them!
I saw some at Wal-Mart yesterday and decided they might be a time saver for Sunday mornings…
maybe they make them more spongy now cause Emma didn’t complain at all about wearing them.
And this morning it was so simple to just take them out, finger through, and she was set.The package I bought has all different sizes in it~
I’m going to try some on my hair one of these nights.
We’ll see how that goes.

I’ve been reading through the book, Sacred Parenting again and just eating it up.
You know one of those books you start off underlining all the parts that stand out to you…
then, realize a chapter or two in that every sentence in the book is underlined!!Here’s some of my favorite things from what I’ve re-read so far::
“Why does parenting offer such a potent pathway to personal growth and reflection? The process of raising children requires skills that God alone possesses, and we are decidedly not God….”
“Parenting regularly reminds us of our absolute humanity….”
“While I count raising children as one of the most profoundly meaningful and rewarding things I’ve ever done, it also has humbled me, frustrated me, and at times completely confounded me. I could never write a book about how to raise a toddler or teen , because in many ways I still don’t have a clue!!”
“Parenting is like an airline emergency. Before takeoff, every plane passenger is instructed that if the oxygen masks come down, parents should put on their own mask first before attending to their kids. Why? Because in an emergency, kids need their parent to be able to think clearly and act effectively. If we don’t take in oxygen, our thinking will grow fuzzy, and then our kids – dependent on us to get it right – will ultimately suffer.
What is true in the air physically is equally true on the ground spiritually. If we neglect our own “spiritual oxygen” – our walk with God – our motivations will become polluted. Our ability to discern, empathize, encourage, and confront will waste away. We must see parenting as a process through which God purifies us – the parents – even as He shapes our children.”

{i like how both these shots look different just from changing the picture style- i think one was Faithful & the other Standard}-And I love this story. I think we all probably have one that’s very similar…
a time we can look back on as our “turning point” in parenting.
“I knew the rules had changed just a few weeks after the birth of our oldest daughter. We were driving south to Oregon when we stopped at a restaurant to get a bite to eat. At one time in my life, my favorite food on earth was a Dairy Queen Blizzard. I just knew that the creator of this fine confection had to be a Christian, because I thought it would take nothing less than the Holy Spirit’s inspiration to come up with anything that tasted as good as and M&M Blizzard. We ordered our burgers and fries, and I had my Blizzard. We took it outside on a sunny day, and at exactly that moment our daughter had her once-every-three-day diaper blowout. Our first born, as a baby, liked to “save it up.” She preferred to wait until we were on our way to church, had just sat down for dinner, had just given her a bath, or some other convenient moment before she expunged the previous seventy-two hours’ worth of digestive effort.
I remember the helpless feeling. Cold fries don’t taste very good, and melted Blizzards lose a lot – yet I knew I had a good ten to fifteen minutes worth of work ahead of me. Because this baby did it all at once, changing her meant not just a new diaper but a veritable bath and full change of clothing. And we were on the road.
“Don’t just stand there,” Lisa said. “Help me!”
“But -” I looked at my fries, already wilting with a shelf life of about ten minutes. I stared forlornly at my Blizzard, teasing my tongue with its promise, yet already looking as though it were about to start boiling in the hot sun. I put the food bag on top of the car and went to work.
Life had changed, indeed. It may sound like a small sacrifice to you – and even now, as I look back a decade and a half later, it seems insubstantial – but it marked a major turning point for this then twenty-five-year old. I was learning to put someone else’s needs ahead of my own. Little did I know that I had begun the spiritually transformative journey called – Parenting.”
If it was going to be easy to raise kids, it never would have started with something called labor.

have a great week… wow! hard to believe it’s already October. where has this year gone?

i love the pictures …and the story about the cute hair!! and the story about the ‘ diaper blowout’ too! :0) oh the life of a mom….
have a wonderful week, amber
Cute hair, check, good job, check…..cute hair is #1…cool!
Pretty girl!
I really like the airplane/oxygen example…so very true.
Beautiful. All of it!
Here’s a little hair tip if you want it… put your or your daughters’ hair in a high pony tail, then put the sponge curlers in your high ponytail. When you take it out in the morning, the curls will fall down from the top of your head to the ends, (it looks longer and fuller that way) if you already tried this dis-regard!!! Speaking of labor…did you have an epidural? I have had four times, but I’m thinking about not this time, would like to talk to someone who didn’t.
Miss you. <3 What a fun and real post. Love Emma’s perspective. I wish I could just think about boys and cute hair… growing up is not fun, and I didn’t even get diaper blow-outs yet!! (I keep hearing about these horrifying things… what’s with kids?!)
I love these pictures. You say you aren’t a great photographer… to that, I say: BAH!
We do the sponge curlers here about once a month. My daughter’s hair is down past her bottom so we have to be sure that her hair is more on the dry side so that it will be dry by morning otherwise the inside of the curl will still be damp and then the curl is more of just a slight wave instead of curls.
@floridayankees -
I have had all 5 of mine without an epidural…3 of them were water births send me an email if you have any questions
I love your pics of your beautiful girl and the story of the diaper blowouts!
Have a wonderful week hun!

Photography is a lot like parenting. Lots of trial and error
Sometimes when you get too esoteric about something like photography; you lose the ability to catch the beauty & spontaneity of the moment.
I think, in the end, being a good parent requires a constant fluidity between practical application and those intuited moments of the day that God continually provides His children.
Emma’s curls are beautiful! I used those things to torture, no, beautify my little girl’s hair. Now she’s on her own…I’m going through this Almost Finished With Parenting phase and am not real comfortable with it, kinda like, Do I HAVE to park my plane now? Then I’m like, I can’t wait to park this plane in the hangar and go be somebody else for a few years. somebody young, skinny, gorgeous, energetic, adored……..I’m so thankful some days to be alive, then other days I want to NOT be here. Crazy? Hmmm, yeah.
I think you did a great job on the pictures. I wish I could take pictures that well. I loved your story, every woman should look for great hair in a man. Kids say the cutest things! I have an 11 year old and some of the stuff she says sometimes blows my mind. Hope you have a great week.
Love this post!! The picture are beautiful as well. I’m always pointing and clicking to, the difference is that my kids always look like mad Russians with their hair going everywhere and clothes no matching. Yours always look so put together LOL
@Thebestthings -
haha! i have plenty of shots of them looking like mad russians too. emma had put on this shirt that is actually kate’s – it was baggy and hanging off her. so when i started taking the pics i just knotted it up in the back to make it tighter. and she’s wearing hot pink basketball shorts that i tried to keep hidden. so.. don’t be fooled.
things aren’t always what they appear in pictures!
LOL OK I feel better
I just need to learn to use the functions on my camera better. I have a nice Canon camera (the rebel XT) but I just know how to point and click. Your pictures are very sweet though and very inspiring! You have got me taking a lot more pictures of my girls and I always keep my camera handy now.
LOL–I feel the same about the photography. Not liking the technical aspects. Little by little, learning. Trying different things to see what they do and how well you can manage them. HAHA–and like Beth said, trial and error. I may do a little more error–that’s why I take so many!! LOL
Love the photo’s of Emma AND her requirement for a guy. Very nice requirement. : )
The diaper blow out—I had the opposite end blow outs. HAHAHA We were afraid to go out to eat–I always requested a table right next to the bathroom for quick clean up. : )
Hope your week goes well!!!
Just beautiful. I love your stories. You write so beautifully. The pictures are just breathtaking. I remember when my little one’s would let me take their pictures. Now they run from me!
I’ll spare you my blow-out story….
I used to do my girls hair up with strips of fabric.
I would still have to give a little ironing to the ends…but I would have to do the ends with the sponge rollers, too.
Those curls lasted all day on my girls’ V E R Y straight locks.
Your posts are always thought provoking…
Have a good week, Amber.
please make sure to check for hereditary balding on any guy Emma starts liking
. be sad if she lost the reason she got married
!!! have to get some curlers for my girls. i have natural curls to deal with and my girls just want some SO badly and have the finest, uncurly hair ever. A curling iron won’t do a thing!
With this parenting thing……
I’m realizing ~ the farther into it we go, the less we know.
HOW can that be?!?!?
Anthing else you do in life, the more experience you have, the more confident you become.
Not happening in the parentig dept!
oh yeah….and good hair.
She’s on the right track!
Afterall,
you know,
it never changes.
no receding hairlines,
no balding,
or thinning!
Good principles to stand on that’ll last a lifetime!
She’s too, too cute!
Something makes me think the boys’ll be likin’ her too!
she`s so pretty! i can so see your husband in her…
she is beautiful and oh so cute with her sayings
You are an awesome photograher Amber
she’s so cute…
that boy must have a very nice hair
Oooo, I think Sacred Parenting is going on my must-read list! I’ve heard it recommended before, and from the excerpts it sounds like one that I’d love. pretty pictures. I especially like the second one in the second set.
Funny thing, after losing all of my hair, last year, I appreciate this new 5 inches of hair,
whether it’s cute, or not!
It’s hair, and that’s great!
Gah! She is just so pretty!
Emma is a crack up! I LOVE the stories you share about parenting and about your children. It encourages me as a mom. And I’ll have to check out that book sometime. My favorite parenting book so far has been “The Mission of Motherhood.” And tell me about it; it already being October! I just blogged about that! But I love Fall so it’s all good. You have a blessed week too!
Cute pictures and I love that the boy must have cute hair. Just adorable. Thanks for sharing a glimpse of the book – it may have to go on my list.
Dear little Em… adorableness through and through.
no time to read through…but I loved the photos! I’ll be back!
Your pics are super good! And the subject super adorable!:)
LOL about the hair!! That girl’s as smart as she is pretty.
Beting married, raising kids…..kids a slow cursifixion of our own self will…..our putting our desires to death on the cross, and putting others wishes, desires
above our own…..Bill and I were visiting Life Action about 15 years ago, having dinner with Nancy DeMoss and their Director, when Nancy shared
a story about a good friend of hers who had recently gotten married at an older age (late 30′s) and she had run into her at the store one day, when asked
how her wedding bliss was going, she replied : “it’s a s-l-o-w crucifixtion of self to become “us”!! I could soooo relate with the ladies seniment! Yep!
That’s what its like, crucification of self daily! Having children makes us die to ourselves, which needs to happen! When I think of my selfishness as a young
woman, I am so thankful God gave me children so I would learn how to be loving, kind, patient and forgiving!(*attributes I was soooo totally lacking!) Looking into the face of our own precious offspring,
it’s so hard to be selfish, hateful and cruel! Early on, you are faced with “I MUST CHANGE! GOD HELP ME!!! AND HE DOES!” THANK GOD!!!
Love you, Mrs. B.
That book looks REALLY good! And I thought your pictures of Emma turned out WONDERFULLY! Not that I know anything about photography, but to me, they turned out really cool!
The hair comment is just too funny! What if her (future) husband has beautiful hair when they get married and then he shaves it all off one day? That would be a tragedy!
I left a comment…it got deleted somehow.
Now I don’t feel like re-writing it. One of my pet peeves!!
Summary: VERY cute pics. Book looks great!
Emma is so pretty~ You did a great job on those pictures– the lighting is beautiful!
Blessings,
Lydia

laughing. your sweet lil emma. funny that she would pick ONE of the things that changes the most!!!
i love your pictures…and emma’s mom, ahem, made me laugh with her words about not really knowing what she’s doing
{with a camera.} trying to believe ya dear ( i know. the technical end gives ME such a headache.)
(a headache and cramps. something gets cramped not knowing how to run it. )
but YOUR pictures turn out great! like SUPER great!
this was especially encouraging. today. of all doggone days.
“We must see parenting as a process through which God purifies us – the parents – even as He shapes our children.”
because sometimes i think that i could be a better mom if i wasn’t having to learn so.so.so. much along WITH my kids.
and yet…i can’t actually be all “processed ” in preparation for a role, now can i?! ya gotta be there.
kinda like i’ll never learn how to run my camera just reading about it. lots to learn in a book or manual, of course!
then…i need hands on trial and error. which is exactly how i am doing the parenting thing.
good stuff.
and btw, thanks for the rec. and looking forward to talking soon. love ya.
I love your blog! I’m a newer reader and have enjoyed the glimpses into your family’s life. Beautiful pictures of your girl.
I want that book! I’m writing it down now so I don’t just forget the title name. Emma is gorgeous! Seriously, the boys are all going to fall in love with her hair so if she gets her dream come true, I’m thinking there will be some luscious hair on your grandchildren.
I think I need to read that book too! Sounds really really good.
And cute pictures and cute hair story! Funny little girl, to even *think* of that! ha!
And your new header has me drooling… Too fun and cute!
