  • {Finding Neverland}

    Almost immediately after I wrote the last post~ seriously… I started into a round of coughing and couldn’t get it to stop. I paced around the living room by myself downstairs for awhile, but when I started feeling the shortness of breath become almost suffocating I went upstairs to Shayne. He could tell I was struggling and jumped out of bed to pace with me :) and talk me through it and rub my back…

    When no relief came after quite some time Shayne said abruptly,

    “We’re going to the hospital…”

    You would have thought that statement right then and there would have shocked me enough into stopping~ :)

    You’d have to know my husband to fully understand…
    super laid back.
    never gets riled up about anything.
    extremely tight... I mean careful with money. ;)

    We don’t have insurance, like alot of self employed people, so I figured a trip to the ER wouldn’t be like a trip to the dollar store – and I figured my Shayne had already figured this long before me. :)

    Also, the fact that when he slashed his own leg open several years back on a metal fence post at a job site, he was determined he didn’t have to go to the hospital.. :) that the 6 inch cut would somehow heal itself.

    ;) So, having him suggest we go in was a first in our marriage.

    We waited until my brother, Nate, came to stay with the kids who were fast asleep, then headed out…

    As we made the short trek to the hospital I would have smiled if I could have stopped coughing – but since I was, I simply put my hand over on Shayne’s arm and he knew what I meant … “SLOW DOWN!!!”

    Something about men driving their wives to the hospital must make them drive extra fast! :)

    We got there around 12:30 and checked in…

    I’ve only been to the ER about three times in my entire life. One of those being over that 6 inch gash in Shayne’s leg.. the one that he thought would grow back together! *wink*

    But it always seems there’s about ten nurses sitting behind the desk staring at you when you walk in, just waiting to jump up and care for your needs…. So naturally you assume this shouldn’t be a long process.

    After an hour wait before someone brought us the paper work to fill out, we started getting a clue that the exact opposite was probably true… :)

    We were put in room 5a – which is obviously the best room to have for amusing entertainment if you ever have to go to the ER at our local hospital and be put in a room! :)

    There was a man laying in a hospital bed in the hall right outside my door… I had noticed him as soon as we walked in actually. He was just laying there. Fully clothed – plaid shirt. blue jeans. dark brown work boots with mud caked on the bottom. His arms were folded over his chest and he looked… he looked dead!

    He was close by the nurses station… and as I sat on the edge of my bed, waiting, I watched him. He never moved or flinched, not one time with all the noise and commotion around him.

    I found myself becoming a bit fixated with trying to see if his arms were moving up and down on his chest or not.. Just about the time I was convinced they weren’t and turned to tell Shayne, I started coughing…

    Suddenly “my dead man” slowly rolled his head over and opened one eye and looked at me!

    I suppose I was a bit relieved he wasn’t truly dead – but that one eye look left me with an eery feeling that he rather wished I was dead!! :/

    I tried to cough into my blanket after that…

    not my armpit like one of the signs hanging in the room instructed.

    ATTENTION:: If you are coughing please put on a mask and try to cough into your armpit.

    Well, I hadn’t been offered a mask, or saw one around anywhere for that matter… and since the coughing into the armpit didn’t seem to muffle the sound very well, and I didn’t want to risk the angry one eyed stare from the man in the hall, I resorted to my blanket instead…

    Armpit or blanket, I don’t think it really mattered much – as I was offered water by every person on the entire floor, I think. Each time, holding up my bottle of Ice Mountain and smiling a thank you. :)

    Still, I think I made the little old lady who kept walking around the nurses station looking for a wheelchair a bit nervous…. She would come out of the room across the hall every now and then and tell the nurses,

    “I need to get a wheelchair for my friend. She only has one leg ya know and can’t walk…”

    The nurses would tell her they were working on getting one. I guess she didn’t believe them as she’d go back behind the station area looking carefully around. I suppose thinking perhaps they kept them under their desks! Each time I’d cough she’d stop and look in at me, saying at one point, “Lans, that girl sounds awful…”

    Then she’d hurry back into her room reminding the nurses once again to find that wheelchair, “because my friend can’t walk with one leg…”

    I later saw that she found her wheelchair…
    I never did actually see her friend!

    On our way to the xray room we were passed by a policeman bringing in a woman in handcuffs… I was almost positive the dead man in the hall opened his one eye and looked at her as if he knew her!!

    No wonder hospitals are such perfect settings for spooky movies!!!

    Finally…. around 4 a.m. the doctor came in.

    He stuck his hand out and said,
    “Hi, I’m Dr. Tinker.”

    By then, I had heard and seen too much, not too mention – tiReD!
    I felt a laugh start to escape my mouth and quickly covered it with a cough, thank goodness.

    Convenient that coughing can be for times when you don’t want the Dr.Tinker to know his name just struck you terribly funny~ :)

    I felt very much like I was in Neverland indeed!

    Well the “fairy doctor” turned out to be more of the mad scientist type, completely confusing me with words I don’t think could even be found in an encyclopedia… if I had even the faintest notion of how to begin to spell them!

    Usually I find the whole medical explanation of why things are doing what they’re doing fascinating~  I like to ask questions and get a biology lesson out of the deal if I can. But at four in the morning, exhausted and sick I found myself staring with glazed over eyes at his arms that were flinging wildly around as he talked – positive he was going to whack Shayne in the face at any moment, who was standing not far from him.

    After going on for awhile about the whatchamacallit tube that releases the whatever stuff to your something or another, I finally asked,

    “So… you’re saying I have a typical type of pneumonia?”

    His arms stopped moving for a second and one went straight up in the air.
    My eyes followed it…
    He just held it there.
    I waited.
    and watched.

    Suddenly he dropped it down on his head, “No. No. No.” he said, pushing his hair back with his hand in a frustrated type gesture. Obviously I hadn’t paid attention in class. :)

    “I’m saying you have a very nontypical type of pneumonia…”

    Here his hand went back in the air…
    This time all three of us in the room were watching it- including him!
    Bringing it down again, he went on –

    “And I’m thinking, possibly…. a rare form of pertussis tied in there as well.”

    “So I have pneumonia AND whooping cough??”

    He pursed his lips tightly together and made a wincing look with his face,

    “Technically, to be completely honest, I think it’s Swine Flu….”

    I don’t know if my eyes grew wide from what he just said or the fact that his ever moving Inspector Gadget type arm had stopped about an inch from my face…

    “Don’t freak out…” he said quickly. “When I say Swine Flu, I mean a fall out of the fall out of the Swine Flu.”

    He must have mistook my tired confused look for one of further interest as he went into another long biological synopsis of where the Swine Flu originated from and the various forms in which it infected more people than were aware…

    Ending the time with us with a brief commentary on his theory of what actually killed Michael Jackson, he shook our hands and asked if we had any questions…

    Questions?? :)

    After that we had only to wait on the nurse to bring in the prescriptions, and the respiratory therapist to bring in the inhaler that I have to use if I feel the shortness of breath again….

    That was a whole other experience I don’t have time to type out…

    They put the inhalers in these tube type things now, that’s supposed to work better for you. But I couldn’t stop getting tickled every time this big burly looking man tried to show me how to use it – - I felt like I was in a scene from a cowboy movie.. learning to smoke the peace pipe!!

    When we were finally released to go I told Shayne I had to run into the restroom real quick – - all that laughing and coughing and trying not to laugh and cough :) made me feel like I couldn’t hold it another second… :)

    Shayne was waiting by the door for me when the paramedics came in with a lady on a stretcher who was obviously pretty drunk… she started reading all the signs around the waiting room out loud, pointing her index finger while doing so. When she came around to where Shayne was standing she stopped and pointed at him,

    “Hey! I want to go over there… See that cute boy over there… I wanna go over there by him….”

    When I came out the restroom they were taking the drunk lady back into a room, and another was coming in that appeared to be in some sort of straight jacket type thing… !!

    Apparently things were going to get even more interesting. :)

    One last glance at my “dead man” who was still there – and out the door we went.

    —-*—-

    … So, that’s our amusing, and I’m sure rather expensive, 4 hour trip to the (Neverland) ER!

    Shayne and I have a friendly wager with each other what the exact cost will be… but we both agree that’s the kind of stuff that’s priceless. The experiences of LIFE~ !
    and despite the cost or why we were there, it’ll always be one of those fun and funny memories for us…
    all of our hospital experiences have been. I should write a post about them all sometime~

    But coming away from that the other night I was reminded I’m not only grateful to have a husband that takes such good care of me. Is protective and kind. But one who laughs with me – - often. easily. Who makes me laugh and helps me find the humor in even the most discouraging of times. Love you Babe~

    —-*—-

    After just a few days on the antibiotics I feel like a new person!!

    thank you God and thank you Dr. Tinker!! :)

    And thanks to all of you who prayed~ I know it’s such a cliche to say you “felt” someone’s prayers. but, I did!

    Also, for the kind words in your comments and messages~ such a sweet encouragement.

    —- * —-

    About grandpa…

    He was able to come home today.

    After running tons of tests they concluded he had suffered from heat stroke and dehydration… he had a cow get out on his farm the other day and had to chase it down, over exerting himself. He’ll be 83 in September and still works harder every day than most men half his age~ he’s amazing.

    I’m blessed we’ve had him this long in our lives – - and we all want it to be alot. lot. lot. longer…. :)

    thanks again for all the prayers for him as well~

    —- *—–

    Just some verses and such I’d written out in my journal last week and this….

    “Come to me, all you who labour and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matt. 11:28

    “Cast all your anxiety on the Lord, for He cares for you.” 1 Pet. 5:7

    Lord, away from the world and hidden from public view,
    I exchange my weariness for Your strength,
    my weakness for Your power,
    my darkness for Your light,
    my problems for Your solutions,
    my burdens for Your freedom,
    my frustrations for Your peace,
    my turmoil for Your calm,
    my hopes for Your promises,
    my afflictions for Your balm of comfort,
    my questions for Your answers,
    my confusion for Your knowledge,
    my doubt for Your assurance,
    my nothingness for Your awesomeness,
    the temporal for the eternal,
    and the impossible for the possible.

    “For the Lord is good, His mercy is everlasting and His truth endures to all generations… ” Ps. 100:5

    “Because Your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.” Ps. 63: 3

  • YOU SURVIVED A TRIP TO THE ER!!! Congratulations! ;)
    I laughed through the entire ER story…..that was great. The Dr. Tinker thing would have done it for me, too. LOL! Oh wow……glad you’re feeling better.

  • Oh, Amber. Dr. Tinker surely must be a fairy from Neverland-here to bless the sick with his pixie dust and medical concoctions.

    SO- Do YoU hAvE sWiNe FlU???

    You’ve actually managed to make a trip to the ER sound fun! <LOL>

    Get well, my friend….and keep inhaling on that peace pipe. :)

  • Well that was quite the experience…I’m glad you could see the humor in the whole ordeal–I chuckled through it, although when I read Swine Flu, my eyes just about popped out of my head, so I can imagine you had yourself a moment there.

    Glad to hear the antibiotics are doing the trick and that your dear Grandpa is on the mend–I can just see him chasing that cow–those old farmers–ya gotta luv em!

    I really appreciated your list of exchanges–oh how we need Him!

    Blessings to you and yours in the busy days ahead. Hugs & Prayers~Dawne

  • Hello Amber, midnight over here, getting a little “drunk”on some wine being out today with two of my beloved siters, I will tell some day in my blog. BUT….I really don’t get you Americans…on not being unsured. In My Country it is AGAINST THE LAW not being insured !!!! Obama really has to provide for you in this, I say, and you really have to co-operate with his government in this !!! I am so absolutely sure of this. Listen to me. Good of your man to intervene and go up to the ER, stop talking about dollars, you lovely woman. . I have understood Hilary Clinton was really on to this, untill she became foreign minister  ( for crying out loud )……I thought it could be Q-fever…You don’t smoke,. do you !!!!??? But.. you still need sleep and rest and sleep and rest…don’t you dance now, you hear !…you just sit in the sun, take your vitamines and eat untill you are really better. I’m sorry, I really don’t get you Americans, being un-insured. It is against the law of humanity !!!!

    Godeliva van Ariadone

    ps. Take me seriously, I am not joking !!!

  • Insurance and medical care are not rights, nor are they the responsibility of the government to provide. :D :D

    ~~~
    Did you know that I wrote a book about the swine flu? It covers the non-prescription ways to not get it, and get over it quick. Let me know if you’d like me to email you a copy.
    http://www.protect-against-swine-flu.com
  • Glad to hear that you are feeling better.  Our area has a whole mess of people with swine flu and actually the doctors around here have stopped testing for swine because there was a statement in our paper today that stated that 90% of people with Type A flu have swine or some offspring of it!   At least everyone…..that I am aware….. of is recovering!
  • Well! I’m just so glad you’re feeling better!! Woo-Hoo!!!! As far as the ER visit goes and the patient diversity, Welcome to my husband’s world. I love to hear the stories of his night shifts. He’s not as amused by them as we are though. ~ I’m sure you would have been his dream patient. (truly sick and needing help…… NOT seeking drugs!!!!!!!!!!)
    Are you getting some good rest? I hope so. :)
    Love you!!
    Beth Ann
  • Oh!!! ~And completely sane!! (I knew there was something else)
  • Oh goodness. . . the comments are as interesting as your post :) this was great. I mean, I’m sure in the midst of it all, it wasn’t all that great – but sounds like you made the most of it all – and with a post with the word neverland in it – you should get lots of google hits on your site! haha. seems to be a popular hit lately I hear. :) so crazy, life is. I am glad you wrote about it – and I so can understand the non-insured homebusiness stuff ! we have regular visits to ers and it always hits us so hard afterwards with the bills! ugh!
    glad you have an answer for sickness and something to help you! hope it is all over soon and you are feeling well!
    Just got in from football conditioning here too – in 100plus heat – we finished up track this week and started up football last week… busy summer evenings, but so fun. the guys love it. Caedman can’t wait until he’s old enough, poor boy, being younger than the others, always waiting, waiting to be “big.” :)
    blessings and prayers for better health soon!
    lys
  • Amber….glad to hear you are feeling better! Great pics! Emma is such a doll!
  • Sounds like quite the adventure… You’re always fun when you get laughing so hard… only probably not with a cough. Hope your crazy life slows down soon… :( :)
  • While I’m terribly sorry that you had to go thru that ordeal, it DOES make a most humorous story! So glad you are feeling better, and your Grandpa too! I’ll pray that the bills will not be too major; we know all too well about lots of medical bills, and esp. ER ones. We are still dealing with some bills from our daughters er experience in January. anyhow….you’re amazing; thanks for sharing your story, and do have a blessed week!
  • @SpazzyMommy -
    yeah.. see, you’re as confused as I was after leaving the er!! :) no. no~ I think what he was saying is that the virus took on many different forms, and he thinks this could “possibly” be one of those. He said he had seen alot of ppl in the past few wks. with pertussis type symptoms, but it wasn’t exactly whooping cough – so I think that was just his own personal observation that it was another form (much milder) of swine flu.
  • @jdbischof -
    YES! after hearing that I’d be extremely interested~
  • soooooooo good to see your post….and even better to know the magic of antibiotics is working!  coughing is horrible!!!!  i sure enjoyed your humorous writing ability…explaining your late night ER trip.  it’s wonderful that you and shane can fine humor instead of devistation.  that will serve you well!  i love the chalk drawings!  and the kids who made them!  it sounds like your summer has kicked in to high gear.  busy as.  blessings!
    oh!  and i’m thanking God that your grandpa is doing well!
  • Wow, that was an adventure. I am glad you are feeling better and you had to go through all that.
  • wow that sounds like quite the experience! That’s great that you were able to laugh about it rather than cry! You’re rendition of the whole episode was quite funny! Hope you’re starting to feel, sound, and get back to normal
  • Hope you feel better soon, Amber. Annoying continuous coughs are the worst. I had it for about a month the month before Ashlyn came. I finally gave in and went to the doc to get on a 5 day prescription….and I don’t go to doctors.
    Hope you get some rest too!
  • @bakersdozen2 -
    yeah, we heard the nurses talking about someone that had come in saying, “oh they’re just after more drugs!” didn’t realize the er was a place ppl looked to get their fix! scary~
  • Aww, you poor thing! I had a chronic cough for four months a couple of years ago, and almost had to go to the ER a couple of times. You make it sound almost—-fun! Hahaha. I’m glad you’re feeling better. And oh, nay nay to the swine flue. I vote no. :)
    PS. your kiddos are still adorable. in case you didn’t already know that. :)
  • You are SO uplifting! You turned a dangerous illness into a hilarious post! Dr. Tinker…seriously???THAT is so funny! And like Dawne, my eyes about popped out of my head when I read about the Swine Flu!!! GOODness girl. I think you should write the book. You’d certainly have ready readers anxious to devour every word! What a blessing that your dear Grandpa is okay and didn’t have a heart attack! And YAY for Shayne (that cute boy, which he IS), for taking such good care of you. I’m glad you’re improving and I hope you don’t just jump back into the swing of everything. Are you still going to do Dolly? love, GAil
  • Oh, hon! <3 I love you.
  • WOW!! Your ER trip was sooo colorful. I guess I had no idea it’s that crazy at night. My grandma used to work as a receptionist in the ER. I should ask her to tell me stories.
    So glad they figured out what was wrong and gave you some meds. :0)
    Is that Jeremy Galvano in the pic with your grandpa?
    Hannah
  • I’m just glad you are back home in one piece and recovering ~ be all well very soon ~
  • LOL… I love your outlook!!! You just have to laugh at life…. sometimes just to get through the tough stuff.   Thanks for sharing you “Neverland” story… I look forward to maybe reading your other ones?    I am glad to hear that you ae recovering and feeling better… and your G’pa too!  Don’t over do it like so many of us do …because we feel a bit “better”   :)
    Blessings to you!!!
  • I went to my xanga subscriptions email intending to go check on you, wondering how you were doing, and the first subs that popped up was you!  What a story!  Glad you could laugh about it, and glad you are feeling better.  My last memory of the ER, was with Steve who had just come out of surgery at the orthopaedic center, and they were wanting to put him in the hospital, so I had to take him through there to get him up to a room…..NOT a happy experience, intense pain, no calf rest on the wheel chair, so I was trying to hold his leg up, and why when you are in a hurry, people seem to be extra S.L.O.W ?!  blehhhh
    (but, even through all that, I’m glad we have them)
  • @Hutch5 - Paul, my husband is a paramedic/EMT/Firefighter and they get calls like that all the time.  Usually regulars who need their fix of some type of drug calls 911 with some symptoms and each time they request a different hospital to go to because they do it so often the nurses and doctors know them.  “So, Jane–what is it this time??”  Paul said he gets so annoyed with those types of people!  Drug seekers.  But they have to take them in.
    Glad you are feeling better.  If I were you, I would have gone into panic mode not because the doctor told me it was a form of the Swine Flu, but because I would be thinking of Lilly and did I “contaminate” her!!  LOL  I think all the hype and media about the Swine Flu has really put people on edge about it.   Of course, it makes me nervous because of Lilly and all.  I don’t think I worry about me.
    Dr. Tinker!!  That is a funny name.  How’s this—-My gynecologist’s name is Dr. Wiwi!!  I laugh at that all the time and I’ve had him as a doctor for several years now!
    You take care of yourself and get rest.  How is the play going with all this??  Have you been able to practice and all?
    Happy about your grandpa.  I mean, not happy because he had the heatstroke but happy that it wasn’t more extensive as a heart attack.  You just tell him next time send those younger boys out to fetch the cow!
  • You are a good writer! Very interesting post on your ER experience…we are so blessed here in Ontario to have all necessary medical care covered by the province…
  • @Hutch5 -  Ahhh…okay. I get it now. ;)
  • This was SO great, Amber!  My absolute favorite line was “He must have mistook my tired confused look for one of further interest”  –somehow that just really struck me funny.  You did a wonderful job of telling the story–lots of great characterization  (like the dame who was after your husband, LOL)  and I am so very glad you are healing now!  Hugs~~
    Know what you mean about the self-employment and no insurance thing–it takes something fairly life-threatening to get us to go, too.  Like the time I was quite sure my husband was dying…turns out he had a kidney stone, but I discovered that wives driving husbands to hospitals drive like maniacs, too.    I was actually praying for a police escort!  But contrary to Ariadone above, I really prefer our system instead of paying twice as much in taxes and getting lousy care.
  • Oh, and I’m so thankful for the news on your grandpa!    That’s wonderful–more time to treasure him!
  • Amber~
    I am soooo glad you are doing better.
    You know, moms are just NOT ALLOWED to be sick.
    :)
    Take care.
    Dawn xo
  • After reading about your ER trip due to a cough, you can imagine my surprise at how your story garnered such outspoken and controversial political opinions in the “comments” section??? Lys must be right . . . the use of that keyword, “Neverland”!!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!
    Only YOU Amber, girl!
    I had no idea you had an ER trip or that you had needed one. Bless your heart. And, for all the opinionated people out there . . . I DON’T HAVE INSURANCE, EITHER! Wish I did. But don’t. Oh well.
    Take care, sweetie! Difficulty breathing is no fun!
    HUGS!
  • Ha ha I find some of your comments as entertaining as your post.Glad to hear things are going better.
    I’ve only had one experience in the ER.It was midnight of course but I went around everyone in the waiting room thankfully cause I would of bled to death if I would of waited like most people do in the ER.
    Have a Blessed Day!
  • So glad you are feeling better. You poor thing.
    I had pneumonia back in May and felt like I was on my death bed
    so I can’t even imagine how you felt.
    Glad to hear your Grandpa is also doing better.
    adorable pictures!
  • So sorry you’ve been sick, but thankful to hear you’re improving. And what an experience you had!  I’ve sat in the ER for so long, I would’ve been glad for the diversion!  :)
  • God bless you and heal you. I was reading and just wanted to somehow HELP! Glad you are feeling better. Keep taking care of yourself…lots of Vit C! Our children’s doc was named Dr. Duda. We thought that was a perfect name! Dr. Tinker…lol, I would have wondered if that was a joke. Glad your Grandpa is doing well. Great pics of the kids…love the pop of orange on cute little Emma.
  • Good morning Amber, today it is the 16th. I hope you are feeling A LOT better todays; meaby visiting your dear Grandfather soon hee…Such poëtic photos of your children, showing such a meditative restingpoint in the hectic that recently was in your home.
    Be well have a good day
    Godeliva
  • Funny! Glad you’re better.(8-)
  • Leave it to Amber to have her Trip to the ER story leaving me in stitches…er…that was a terrible pun if I have to say so myself…and Tinker?! No way! Too funny. Clearly your sense of humor stayed alert and oriented!  I am sorry that you were so sick!!! Moms aren’t allowed to get sick like that, didn’t you know?!!! I  hope that you are recovering and resting and all that. I’ll continue to pray. I can do that from here. If ya lived closer I’d be bringing dinner too.
  • Your story is hilarious!  I have started reading your post about 5 different times and just now had the chance to finish it up.  I hope you’re feeling back to yourself really soon!  Wow, what an experience you had in the ER.  Such cute pictures of Emma too! =)
  • i don’t know how i missed this post, but i did.  i am so glad you got antibiotics and this cough taken care of…pneumonia is not something to mess around with….hope you are totally well from this now.
