{A Photo Journey}
————— background
D.C. is a place I’d never been – but had always wanted to…
Being married to a Canadian it’s not exactly high on the vacation destinations list.
Not that we have one. But, well, if we did…
it wouldn’t be!
Kat is a xanga friend I’d never met – but had always wanted to…
Being married to a Can.. er, uh.. my husband,
he thinks it’s a little “weird” I’d want to meet total strangers..
but with each one I do – discovering they’re actually REAL
and even nicer in person –
he’s starting to come around to the idea!
So several weeks back when Kat called and invited me to come for a visit,
I was excited and a little {no alot} blown away by her generosity to fly me out.
But generous is a word that immediately comes to mind when I think of her~
she has sent little gifts here and there throughout the years,
and has pretty much solely clothed my Kate with all her hand me downs.
Kate is so proud and affectionately refers to them as her “Kat collection.”
So it was super fun to finally get to meet the already loved, Kat~
Shayne is right in the sense that it is all rather “weird” when you really stop to think about it..
being friends with someone…
sharing in their life…
feeling a sense of love for them…
knowing where they live..
and even what they ate for dinner last night..
yet NEVER having met them!!!
So, yeah.. I think when the opportunity comes to finally meet you wonder how it’ll go -
will they be the same person you’ve perceived them to be?
will it be all too awkward?
with Kat~ I.just.knew.
Knew there would be a comfortableness and sense of ease.
She has that wonderful quality, not everyone does, to make others feel that way.
I think it comes from being content with who you are… where you’re at in life
When you’re okay with you, others are too.
No fronts. No cover up’s.
Not afraid to be transparent..
even if that means others seeing your struggles or weaknesses.
Anyway – I liked many things about her
but if I had to name my favorite, that would be it.
[and this is my favorite picture i took of her while there]
————— introspect
Going away on that particular weekend seemed especially needed.
It had been a rough week and half leading up to it
and I felt the timing was such a God thing – like He’s so good at doing.
————— the trip, day one
I kept feeling that morning when I left that I’d forgotten something…
don’t ya hate that?
All the way to the airport I was going over it in my mind.
toothbrush – check
socks – check
clean underwear- check
boarding pass – check
As soon as the plane was airborne and I took my camera out to snap a few pictures I realized –
memory card – no check
Good thing I was going to visit a photographer…
So I sat back, took mental pictures of the earth below quickly fading into a monopoly board,
and the wonderful fall colors on the trees that resembled very much an old patch work quilt my grandma has on her bed..beautiful.
It was pouring rain when I got into D.C.
Kat and I met.
Began talking instantly,
non stopedly
jumped a taxi
and headed to her apartment.
Later that night we walked a few miles…
still pouring rain,
got a bite for dinner.
Tried to warm our drenched, cold feet.
Browsed around a Michael’s store-
Grabbed a Starbucks..
I put my feet in mine.
Then headed out later to see a movie.
————— the trip, day two
Went into D.C. with Kat’s roommate, Katie.
Katie is a sweetheart.
kind. laid back. easy to be around.
I instantly loved her. –
Her husband is serving in Afghanistan.
Without Katie, Kat and I would have probably roamed hopelessly about…
but since she knew exactly where to go, we were able to see so much in a short amount of time.
[this guy was doing his thang.. dancing up a storm in front of the White House. i loved his spirit]

[this little guy was in a world all his own.. ]
[the Vietnam Memorial was sobering to me]
[interesting you can see the reflection of the living in the wall of the dead]

[a kat photo]

fun in the leaves…

[kat photos]
the Asian goddess…

————— the trip, day three
Kat and Katie were both gone to work~
so after enjoying a nice long hot bath…
I walked a few miles to get lunch.
then headed down to Old Alexandria.
It was a gorgeous day and I loved strolling around..
sitting at the harbor..
snapping pictures..
talking to random strangers..
one lady started witnessing to me.
I listened politely until she was done –
then smiled and told her that Jesus was indeed my Lord and Savior.
she gave me a huge hug..
I don’t know if it was from excitement over me being a fellow Christian,
or simply from relief because I could tell she was so nervous talking to me.
I smile even now thinking of it.
[i liked watching this little girl feeding the pigeons]

[i think this bird was posing!]

[i found this table in one of the shops.. i'm going back one day to buy it!]
[taxi ride]
my friend Beth only lives about an hour from D.C. so she drove over that afternoon to meet up~

[waiting on the curb for her to get there]
[what you do while you wait.. take goofy pictures of yourself]
we headed downtown to take in a few sights before dinner…
[on the steps of the Capitol Building]
[Supreme Court steps - legally blonde?]
met up with the other girls at the Old Ebbitt Grill... a cool historic eatery near the White House.
another friend of Kat’s had come in that day – also who she had never met..
neither had she met Beth yet,
nor I Caitlyn {the other friend who’d come in}
nor Caitlyn me, or Beth, or Katie,
or Katie, Beth..
or Beth, Caitlyn or Katie, or Kat…
it was a good night.went to the Jefferson Memorial afterwards…

[i liked this couple sitting here.. they looked deep in thought]
[i liked what this said. wonder how it would look hanging in my house?]

[a kat photo]go here to see our crazy impromptu dance~
————— the trip, day four
headed back home.
[the germ incubator]
It was kinda funny.. I’m not a huge traveler,
flying that is –
but I tried to pack everything so I could just carry it on with me.
all my little liquids, gels, creams, and gloss in baggies…
Cincinnati is a pretty big airport – going, I went through security without a hitch.
I was frisked.. but I think that was random.
coming back, in the Reagan National Airport, which isn’t that huge..
got called over for a bag check in security…
had to empty out all my baggies w/ my little liquids, gels, creams, and gloss.
The guy told me they all had to fit in ONE bag!!
I thought the rule was everything in it’s own bag.. so yeah..
you can imagine how many baggies of things I had.
He told me to choose the things I wanted..
So as I was – and rambling off about how I never fly,
and that I had come through Cincy security without a problem..
and I just was never going to fit everything I wanted to keep in one bag…
The guy started stuffing things in himself.
and by stuffing I mean stuffing..
the bag wouldn’t close..
things were coming out the top..
He opened my purse and stuck it in.
“And here.. you can take this too..” he said, handing me my 5 oz. {oops} jar of hair cream stuff.
I think my talking must have made him nervous or aggravated or something..
obviously, he was wanting to be done and over with me!
Then, once I landed in Cincy I got so screwed up as to where I was going…
my cell phone wouldn’t work.. so I couldn’t call Shayne to find out where he was…
or where I was. {he’s my living gps}
I ended up on the opposite side of the airport, in some other terminal~
my family thought that was funny I spent the whole weekend in a strange, new city..
then come home and get lost!!
but hey – the airport isn’t exactly familiar stomping grounds to me.
atleast if I was stranded there it wouldn’t be so bad though…
those places are like malls now!!!
————— conclusion
A wonderful weekend. complete with –
a new life long friend made.
my first taxi ride alone!
my first Thai food eaten.
quiet time with my thoughts & the Lord.
backing out of 4 parking garages!
lots of laughter.
a little dancing.
fun memories.
serious talks.
sweet times.
tons of smiles.
heart blessed.
Thanks again Katherine~ so thoughtful. so sweet. so glad you’re in my life. love you.
[my favorite thing about this picture is the ladies in the background.. maybe someday we'll go back. you be the redhead, kat!]
————— question
Ever been to D.C.?
what’s your favorite thing there? … and why.
I’d have to say mine was the Lincoln Memorial –
[a kat photo]
standing there looking up at this larger than life, all consuming monument I couldn’t help but to wonder what he would think about it all _ thousands of people flocking to stare at an image carved in stone…
I’m sure his greatness far exceeded his expectation. If he had an expectation – I think he simply lived his life. did the next thing. was concerned for the well being of others. and acted upon what he felt was right.
.. I guess the idea inspires me.
God taking ordinary people and using them to alter history and change lives~
Kinda gives a person hope, don’t ya think.

Wow I loved this! I wish I could pick a favorite picture, but by the time I finished this post I had about SIX favorite and still loved all the rest. The “reflection of living” in the memorial photo was beautiful. I also loved the girl feeding the pigeons, and the pictures of the shop signs just below that.
And of course every picture of you is beautiful. I look at the pictures of you and your kids and can’t believe there are people out there that look as wonderful as you guys without makeup, lighting, and airbrushing!
Looks like it was a great trip, thanks for sharing it.
ahh how i love this post. DC is my single most favorite place to be. Maybe because my best friends lives in ALEXANDRIA (isnt is BEAUTIFUL?!) or because im a major history buff….either way, i love it there. I’m from a smaller town in PA, going to DC rocks my world. So different they way they live. the buildings, the houses, the eating establishments. Thank you for this post. Makes me want to hop in my van and drive the 7 hours to hug my BFF and see the sights. I’m glad you got to experience it. There is truly nothing like DC in my opinon.
wOw….loved this post!!! what an awesome trip…a forever memory! the pics are amazing~ absolutely love DC. so happy you were able to go and enjoy~!!! looks like so much fun.
Looks like you had a wonderful time! How fun to meet new friends and connect with old ones……..Iz and I spent a day in DC real soon after we were married, I think I could go back for a couple days and look things over again. So much history, that is so good to remember. Glad you had a few days to relax and have some time for yourself…
I loved this photo journey!
I love your blogs. You have such a gift at expressing yourself through your photos and creative writing.
Your trip sounds so amazing and you have such amazing memories from all the photos! WOW!! Kat seems like a generous, loving person.
Well Lucas has found the bookshelf and is trying to eat a caricature we had done so I have to go! :0)
I did get to the orchard. But we need to go again. We ate everything I made with the apples. :0)
I love to visit Washington and your photos are wonderful!! Thank you for taking us on your adventure!
Amber, You are so creative with the whole collage thing! ~ I love the way you put together the pictures of Chicago & D.C. Soooo talented!
You had such a packed vacation. you must have just collapsed when you got home.
Love the Viet Nam war memorial reflection pictures. and the ones of you & Kat in front of the Washington Monument.
But the next time we visit, wherever it is, we’ll sit completely still and drink hot tea. How ’bout it?
Looks like a “shot in the arm” kind of weekend! Glad you had fun and the pic are all great!
Just lovely, dear… you took such amazing photos, and you edited them so prettily. I love how you captured the essence of the visit. Ugh, I’m too tired and busy to edit mine. It will have to wait. At least I’ll get the excitement and fun of reliving those memories at a later date! Love it.
You were way too kind in your write-up. I wanted a friend and I got one.
As Michael will attest, I’m really good at getting my own way because I pretend to have good motives… so prettily. Hah! I should have been a lastborn child! I had a fantastic time with you, dear. All those chats did me good. Love.
I don’t think my husband understands these online relationships, either! I’ve met a handful of people in real life and they have been exactly as they were online. I think we have an intuitive sense about who to trust, don’t you?
What a lovely trip, and the photos are fantastic!
Wow, what an adventure! Lovely photos too. Blessings~
so fun!! love all the pics…. what a fun, refreshing trip. i heart those kinds of trips. i had one last year exactly at this time to oregon… blessings!
Loved your pictures!! We went to DC during the Tea Party (we didn’t know it was going on). We road the Metro for the first time, five children and all:). I too love DC and am planning on going back. So much to see and so rich in history. Glad you enjoyed your trip.
Now how cool is that?!!
Nope, I’ve never been to D.C but a trip there is on my bucket list and (surprise) I’m Canadian!
What a blessing and a treat for y’all to get together like like….what fun!! I’m jealous but in a good way!
So. Much. Fun. Wow! What a blessing to be able to make such friends! You made me want to visit DC ~ never been, but it’s on my list of to-do’s (someday) along with the other ‘half’ of the US
)
And great photos!
DC is a wonderful place! And you saw so much of it — what a wonderful visit…
oh! what a FUN trip! i LOVED LOVED LOVED reading about this excursion! your new/old xanga friend/friends. yes! we DO know all the ins and outs of every one….but have never met. it. is. crazy.
(this past thursday, the girl who did my mammogram knew everything about me and my family from reading my xanga post. i never saw or knew of her.) WOW!
anyway…..kat is gorgeous! and so are you! these pics, from 2 great photographers, were amazing. i just loved the puddle picture. and as i continued on….there were so many pics i loved that i can no longer remember which ones they were. oh! I DID LOVE the one kat took of you…looking over your shoulder, legs entwined.
washington d.c. is a FUN area. i live less than 3 hrs. from there.
oh! and meeting up with beautiful beth! this. is wonderful.
the lincoln memorial is my favorite spot also!
THANKS for sharing your trip with us all! XOXOXOX
This is one my very favorite posts you’ve ever done.
This is awesome. I got to meet TWO of my best internet friends in September…one came all the way from Germany!!
IT was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! We went on vacation together- and it was so awesome to finally put voices and mannerisms with a person I already knew and loved for such a long time!
Fabulous post and visit!! So happy for you…what a great girl get-a-way! You all are so cute!
I have been to DC twice with my hubby. Last time we were there when we won a trip with Pampered Chef…we used to be consultants. It was wonderful as our hotel and some meals were paid for and so much to do and see is free. We were way broke at the time
I loved the Lincoln and Vietnam memorials. You are right the Vietnam memorial is very sobering and brought tears to my eyes. I think Lincoln was a very wise man…so much of his learning was from the Bible. He is so popular, but I do not think everyone realizes that his views and choices were formed in the word and prayer!
How awesomely fun this had to be.What a great place to meet.Gorgeous photos. The only time I’ve been to D.C-it was a packed out mess and we did the sightseeing from our vehicle window.Someday I want to go back and see more things on foot….Loved this beautiful tour you gave us.carol
Gorgeous photos of the monuments lady! I went at the end of ’06 – remember that Wednesday night when I almost died from asthma? that was the night before we left–kinda a bummer for the trip, but it was still fantastic! I’m dying to go again as a photographer now!
So glad you had the opportunity for that little joy-trip! love you =)
What a fabulous gift from Kat! This is such a fun blog! The picture with the GASP! factor is the one of the pillars, looking up to the ceiling where there are like these flowers in squares. That picture is IT for me. The next favorite is the one of you and Kat with the old ladies in the background, posing for their own picture. I think it is so awesome that you and Beth and the other gals all got together and had such fun. Someday, I hope to meet some Xanga people because they are SUCH a fabulous group of people! Including YOU, dearie! Love, GAil
We went to D.C. on our honeymoon and it was in the spring. The thing that was absolutely gorgeous at that time was the cherry blossoms at their fullest bloom. Talk about breathtakingly beautiful!! I enjoyed the monuments, etc. too, but I am so into natural beauty.
What a fun trip! my husband does not get the whole xanga blog friendships either
what great pictures and how fun you got to meet Kat.
You always have the cutest outfits!
So happy for you that you got a chance to go to D.C and meet
some wonderful friends
lol..loved the term germ incubator for an airplane
you couldn’t be more right
absolutely FANTASTIC photo journal of DC! How wonderful it seemed to let some of that creative juice flow through the lens of a camera!
So great. I am so glad you got away and hot to do some fun girl stuff.!!! I am a bit envious……okay CRAZY ENVIOUS…….plus you are so dang cute!!! I felt like I was on the trip with you through the pictures. I am so gun shy about meeting people face to face it freaks me out a bit…….not like I woudn’t do it just scary a bit. So impressed you actually meet people. Maybe someday we will actually meet. I do hope so. Blessings friend. I pray all is well with your soul!!!
looks like lots and lots of fun for all of you —
I went to DC when I was 13 and then again with R when Scott was a baby — beautiful place in the fall. ~ we enjoyed it too – but didn’t take many pics back then
wish I had.~ so neat that we can get together even when we don’t know each other because of a common love for God, seeking Him, – yeah in different walks of life and at different levels but nevertheless, wanting His will for our lives. that’s cool . that’s the body of Christ.
love the leaf pics!
hope you had a good weekend – ! headed to the rodeo!
lys
SHWEW! thought I would never make it to the bottom of this post. LOL. Glad I finally did .. I enjoyed every part! I’m going to come back and look again when I’m less tired. Hope your enjoying your weekend.
Lotsa fun ~ my favorite place there was the White House ~ the most impressive, though, had to be the Holocaust museum.
i’m SO glad you got to go, and know the timing was perfect… thanks for sharing about your trip… you can find out about my favorite things in DC in a comment i just left kat on my blog [three posts down, the bebe announcement one.].
~*
also!!! what would you say if i told you that marks. and i have an almost 4-hour layover in cincinatti january 4th?
~*
Love the trip pics with the girls but really, what I got out of this post is the following: “I MUST have a pair of suede low heel boots!”
@tildystar -
i would say “come on over!!”
we’re super close to the airport. let me know details as it get’s closer.. we’d so love a visit w/ you guys on your way through. count on it for sure if it works for you.
what an awesome trip to see a dear friend. what a blessing. i’ve been on Xanga for about 5 or 6 years and i haven’t really met anyone in person…but i’d llove to one day. Hopefully my one dear friend will be back up here and i’ll be able to connect with her. thanks for sharing all those beautiful pictures with us. I adore this playlist. whenever i come to your site, i’m always blessed by your choice in music.
just a question, what is the tribute near the beginning that seems to have three horns going out of it…it seems to be quite large, but i don’t remember seeing it when i was in DC several years ago. the other monuments are familiar to me…but that might be a new one? what does it stand for> i’m intrigued by it. be blessed my friend.
Such a fun post-story and all! I have a friend similar to that, we went to online school in 7th grade… and have talked ever since and years later we met up in Philly. It was bliss!
In DC the museum of Science and the History museum were pretty rocking, for a 5th grader.
Guess i should get back there one of these days!!
WOW!!!!!!!!! Did not know you were planning a trip, LOVED being able to ‘tag along’ via the WONDERFUL PHOTOS y’all made!!!!!!!!!!!! Some of those photos are so incredible!!!!!!!!!! The one shot straight up at those huge columns is totally incredible, I love it!! Looks like y’al had bunches of fun! So glad you got to go! Travelling solo is something I think all women should do either once in their life or many times if they can, you learn so much about yourself that way.
Looks like y’all had some great adventures! Thanks for posting it all, again, I felt like I was right there beside you.
PS, you and I are both doing the same nail polish, quite ‘edgy’ arent we? ha/ha LOL (smile)
Hello Amber, What a great journey…good for you, my friend. Such lovely ladies, you all. Thank you for this formidable post with all the text and beautiful photo’s. And isn’t it rewarding to be a little away from the house and the family… just a little while, just to come closer in touch with one self again ? And refill your energy ? How wonderful of Beth to drive over…such blessed friendships.
Godeliva
What a FUN trip! I have always wanted to meet a Xanga friend…I’ve just got to work up the courage to ask my parents if I can. Lol. They don’t quite get the whole “talking to a person you’ve never met” bit.
It looks like a lovely trip, and what INCREDIBLE photos! I was seriously in awe over every, single picture you took! Beautiful! You really brought DC to life in these pictures. I loved our trip to DC. We’re from IN so it was quite an adventure for us to go there!
Had you already met Beth or was that your first time meeting her too?
I recently found your blog, via a mutual “friend”–one whom I’ve never actually met by the way! =) I’ve enjoyed perusing your posts very much. You’re a beautful lady inside and out. I loved all the photos in this post. They really are worth a thousand words. I live about 2 hours from D.C. and have been there numbers of times. But never in the Fall. (Never been to Boston in the Fall either, but that’s another story for another time.) Anyway, I’ve bookmarked your site and shall return! Blessings!!
What GREAT pics!!! looks like you had a wonderful time. thanks for sharing. Haven’t been to DC for years. We are headed there in December for a late anniversary get-a-way. can’t wait!!
hey, that looks like a blast! i was there three times in my short life.
when i was real little my family went there for a day, went there on a school field trip long time ago, and just a year ago my youth went there for our field trip. and all the times i’ve been there, nothing seems to stick out as a favorite.
my sisters and i have always wanted to go for the cherry blossom festival, but never made it. it is a neat place to go and its only 4 hours from here!! i should go more often!!
glad you had fun!!
That looks like SO MUCH FUN!!!! I would LOVE to go on a “girl trip” like that! Your pictures were so fun to look at! I have been reading your blog for a while and really enjoy it. I lived in Cincinnati as a teenager and graduated from Kings HS so it is fun to see you write about places that I am familiar with.
honestly, some of my closest friends I have met through xanga…I have been to california to visit some of them three times now, even got invited to one of their daughter’s wedding, which was really small and I was so honored to be a part of it…I have my soul sister friend from Chicago who I met on xanga…we so love getting together….so I totally relate…I have friends all over the world on here and am so blessed to have them…and YES I mean you too beautiful friend!!!!!!
ps I friended you on facebook
Charlotte Olson
@leannenannette -
yes, i had met beth before.
but not until last year.. and kinda sorta b/cause of xanga too. we had a mutual friend that we both heard about each other through for years – but didn’t connect personally until xanga.
@portiajules -
k. i’ll accept.
@Hutch5 - Oh how neat!
What a wonderful, wonderful experience and terrific pics! I think my hubby is finally get used to my Xanga friends….and he’s even met one with me. Most fun. I like DC very much…..I think my favorite things there are the art museums and all the people from all around the world. I’d love to just sit somewhere and take pictures of random, but oh-so-interesting strangers. So glad you got to do this.
This was an awesome tribute to Kat ( oh my word I love her now too. lol.) and the Beauty and Power of friendship!
I couldn’t wait to see your photos—they are just gorgeous. Gorgeous. Love ‘em. I just love ‘em.
D.C. is one of my very most favorite places ( this past spring we were actually there on three separate occasions in just 1 week…crazy. i know ) and I cannot pick just one thing that I like about it. We usually travel in on the parkway (when we can avoid the metro) and I tell you, I feel like a little kid on Christmas I am so excited. I love the history, the warm fuzzies of childhood memories made there, the food at the Cactus Cantina ( uptown a bit, near the National Cathedral, corner of Wisconsin and Macomb) and the history and did I mention the history?!
And I don’t know how to tell ya…I am so sorry about the table. It’s already taken…sorry. I didn’t know about you liking it and all. It looks lovely right here in my house.
Blessings!
And two more cents from me…
Love Alexandria too. We are usually there on our bicycles.
Ok. That’s all. I think that I’m done now.
Happy Thursday!
how FUN!!! Now that I am a parent, I have a whooooole new appreciation for times like this, getting out alone “with the girls.”
by the way, you were just 20 minutes away from where I live! I could have joined your already mixed group!
@angiearmour -
i SO wish i had known that.. that would have been a blast to have you with us!! next time i visit anywhere i’m going to put up a post telling ppl ahead of time and invite whoever wants to come for a big get-together. since being in d.c. i’ve discovered so many of my xanga friends are around that area, or not far…!!!
First of all I want to say that you guys both have CUTE SHOES!! Secondly, I have never been to DC either and your photos make me want to go there really bad!!! Great shots of the memorial walls. Love the steps too!! All so fun!
