{Okay, I admit it.. I’m a hypocrite!}
Year after year I rant and rave how un-traditional,
even un-American it is that we seem to go straight from Halloween to Christmas.Thanksgiving tends to lose it’s climax when every store is playing, “Joy to the World.”
Homes appear to have already, “Decked the Halls.”
And obviously everywhere you turn, “It’s Beginning to Look alot like Christmas.”So I’m always a staunch believer that the Christmas decorations cannot go up until AFTER Thanksgiving!
I’m sorry, pumpkins and orange leaves just don’t mixed with twinkling white lights and red candy canes.
But today… which happens to be unseasonably warm and 70 degrees outside.. while driving back from lunch with Mom and Danny I noticed a lady stringing her blue Christmas lights on the already hung garland down her fence row.
“Now there’s a smart lady!” I thought to myself.
When I got home I sat in the van for a few minutes looking at the house and garage.
I knew there was a history lesson that needed to be done with the kids ..
and Ben’s practice pants that needed washed for football tonight ..but history can always be taught on cold dreary days we’re stuck inside.
and the practice pants are only going to get dirty again.So…………………..
I can see my husband even now when he gets home.
He’ll shake his head from side to side and say just.one.word~“Impulsive!!”
I guess I’ve crossed over to the other side and caved on my beliefs ..
Atleast for this year.
But no promises –
I might forever be changed by this warm weather decorating.
I still really do think this ..
and felt a bit like this putting up the decorations ..
and though it’s not completely finished like this ..{and can i just point out, there is seriously a conspiracy going on with the manufacturer’s of Christmas lights! i think they make those things to only last one season. i don’t care if i plug a strand in and it works.. i’ll still buy a new box. because at some point.. usually just when the tree is completely done, or the lights all hung along the eaves of the roof.. if they’re not a brand new pair, trust me! — they’ll quit working, or just that one spot right in the middle will go out!!} : /
BUT. in a few weeks after Thanksgiving ..
instead of being outside like I usually am,
attempting to fluff garland with fingers that won’t bend from being frozen ..
and wiping my nose that’s running off my chin on mitts that are soggy and wet from already wiping it countless times ..I’ll be glad for the inspiration of the smart lady I passed by today!
Ben was taking pictures of the homemade football field he made in the yard and snapped these~
and yes. I always coordinate the scissors I carry in my back pocket to match my shirt!

Haha, you make me smile. Good idea on the outdoor decorations now when it is warm. You have such pretty decorations for Thanksgiving…hopefully still those indoors!!
I just bought a new strand of white lights to put out on the balcony. Now that it gets dark early it is nice to have the twinkle lights out there. I do white so they go with anything. Out front we will do the multicolor lights once it is December! I never got my husband to bring up the Fall decor from the garage, but we are having Thanksgiving here so he will have to do so soon and then it will turn around almost right away to Christmas!
ha! that’s too funny!
knowing that american thanksgiving won’t be on my calendar this year has put me on the track of CHRISTMAS for weeks, now. i guess i could try and do my own turkey dinner, but, it’s not the same w/o the rest of my family in alabama…. ever since i found out about bebe, i have been thinking christmas, b/c it means HOME and FAMILY. i can’t wait.

You’re funny. I caved last year….so I know how you feel.
A wee hypocritical…and yet smart too!
I liked seeing the old pictures of your little one from 2007.
Lovely post!!
You’re so cute & funny, too!!
You are a hypocrite! I’m still holding out to not put up Christmas decorations before December. Although – I don’t do outside lights, so cold won’t be a problem.
lol! i’m the same way, although this year i seem to have the christmas bug.
i’ve been begging my husband to let me start—MN gets cold EARLY—he’s insisting on waiting til the 28th.
LOL. This makes me get the itch to put mine up also.
The picture of the house all decorated from one of the previous years really looked pretty…I got to be honest though I have a hard time relating to all this exterior decorating for christmas as it is not something we do in the country I come from…and I always wonder where do you store all the stuff for the other 11 months of the year…with that said, it is fun to go and see the houses all beautifully decorated!
You are adorable girl. I did notice the scissors and wonder.
Smart girl! You’ll be glad this job is done when the cold sets in. That’s one thing about living in Canada, by this time Thanksgiving is well behind and lights are starting to go up…I’m sure people are thinking the same thing to beat the cold and snow!
Hahaha, how funny — the tones of our posts being similar yet different. I do not have a problem with the holidays being separated at all, I just have a problem when people get downright grouchy and pushy with each other about how they choose to do Christmas. “What? You’re putting your tree up already? IT HASN’T BEEN THANKSGIVING YET! *initiate rant*”
My parents never did decorate before Thanksgiving, if my memory serves me correctly. I love, love, love Thanksgiving; I just love the whole season so it is natural for me that they meld a little bit.
Happy decorating!

.. but of course I coordinate them w/ my clothes! I have a pair in every color and keep them in a nice little line in my sock drawer!!
I’ve the perfect solution! Just move to MS and you can find a pleasantly warm day “in season” to put up outside decorations! But the downside…they are never as pretty without snow on the ground. Guess you just can’t win! I find putting up the tree and all the Christmas decorations have lost a lot of the fun with noone else in the house to enjoy it and get excited. It becomes more like a “job” but I enjoy the finished product, even if I’m always gone a good bit of the season visiting children up north.
Just move down the Texas and you won’t have to fight with the cold. If it’s too cold one day you only have to wait till the afternoon and it will be nice and hot
My piano teacher who is always so organized, has her’s up and my mom actually suggested we should put ours up-that was before my dad’s accident. Doubt that will happen since my dad won’t be doing it this year. In fact I’m not sure we’ll even get christmas lights this year.
I am usually doing good to just put up a tree. You have inspired me to decorate outside as well. You have a great writing style.
Aww, your little Emma is just adorable. I checked out your older post, your house is beautiful! Good for you for getting a head start on decorating
. I would like to start decorating soon but I may just wait until after Thanksgiving dinner.
You have gone over to the other side! Oh no!
Since we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in Denmark, Christmas decorating seems to start extra early! I noticed about two weeks ago that some neighbors already had some colored lights on their balcony. I don’t plan to do much of any decorating because we will be going to N. Ireland to spend Christmas with our youngest daughter and her husband. I will put a wreath on the front door of our apartment come December. I am sure your home is looking lovely! I checked out the past post with your decorations and they were beautiful!
it does seem early to have christmas stuff… but the retailers are hurtin’ and at least its not freezing. happy holidays!
We live in a tourist town, so the merchants are in high gear for Christmas already – all the decor is up and sales and extravaganzas scheduled for the next three weeks – and we have had some beautiful summer-like days that seems unusual for November in the north – guess they’re takin advantage of it.
Was interesting to read others comments about not celebrating Thanksgiving or having celebrated the holiday already – I love to read about others different cultures and traditions – very interesting.
I do love that we decorate for and celebrate the birth of Jesus for what must be two-three months – but, I realize there is a lot of hype on decorations, shopping, etc – I hope we can all keep focused on the reason for this season in all the lights, tinsel, hustle and bustle. Wow – a wreath in each window!! Where did you find so many wreaths?? There’s a big, big bulk food store around here that does the same and shines alternating red and green lights on each window – looks very festive.
oh, you’re great! love it! and while I think too that Thanksgiving is totally overlooked and Christmas is over commercialized, there is just something about gettin’ ready for it! Shoot, I’m always pretty resolved that I will N.O.T. put up Christmas decor before Thanksgiving, but now you’re making me think twice!! LOL! Your house looks(ed) so amazing…can’t wait to see the finished product!
have yourself a jolly
day!

Hmmm… were you listening to WAKW???
Good idea and your pictures make me laugh….we would be great in photos together…i am a great fan of the funny shots!!! I ALWAYS decorate Thanksgiving night….ALWAYS!!! I can’t wait for xmas!!!
Oh my! There must be a “Christmas Season Bug” going around this year. Jesse and I bought wrapping paper and some new clear twinkling light sets when we shopped at Wal-Mart last weekend! He even said he might put up outdoor lights this year. Because of disagreements (he and I) about the accuracy of Christmas stories vs the pagan traditions of old, we haven’t done much for Christmas in the past 3 or 4 years. Something changed this year and I sense early decorating in the air!
As far as Christmas decorations up while you eat Thanksgiving dinner, I ‘ll tell you what I do: I hang greenery with twinkling lights and turn everything on Thanksgiving night. Starting on Friday, I add decorations here and there (I use an outdoor theme: pinecones, berries, birds, etc.) to the greenery. The job becomes enjoyable, rather than stressful.
Secretly I will admit: The girls and I started listening to the “Sounds of the Season” cable TV music channel. AND, last week, we started “MUSIC CLASS” which is instruction on how to read music . . . the music being Christmas songs!
I’m a hypocrite, too, this year!
I admit the title brought me here and I was fully expecting a spiritually written post! o.0 Hahaha. Glad for the laugh instead. Like someone else said the comments are interesting to read also and har about different cultures and traditions.
Last year was the first year we decorated before Thanksgiving. (Like the day before)
That’s my favorite part of the season ~just sitting around the fire in the evenings; listening to the music playing in the background and chatting with the kids. If there weren’t a day where we all sat around opening presents, that would be fine with me. (Gift giving is dead last for me on the “love language” scale)
You really are so very fashionable, Amber! It’s nice to see that quality in my friends….. come to think of it ~most of my friends are that way. I hope one day it will rub off on me.
My sister-in-law recently said to me while looking down at my only pair of open- toed and very tattered heels on my unmanicured feet, ~ “Beth sweetheart, we need to take you shoe shopping sometime soon”
Anyway, I love to visit your blog, if only for aesthetic reasons. But you offer so much more with the thoughts of your ♥
Happy Tuesday, Dear Friend!!
ok…you HAVE to read my post from yesterday..you will so laugh!!!
I agree with you on the lights. We always have a strand or two that won’t turn on at all! You are such a good decorator! I love the pics of your home. I’d love to know where you like to shope for Christmas decorations!:) It gets me in the mood to decorate!

how did you guess!
Well. Goodness. I should send Grace over to your house. She was pulling out the ornaments the other day to decorate a tree outside and I made her put them back. LOL ((hugs)) to you today!!
We put up our twinkly lights one year and decided to leave them year round. Only problem is that some of the lights are not functioning…..Rob hasn’t figured out yet what the problemo is….
Hi Amber,
My mom recently opened a blog on ‘xanga’, and I am used to blogger, so I don’t know how to get a header ‘url’ on there. I even googled how to do it! After a window poped up and said that it need to have http:// before it, so I did that, but it still didn’t work. I fee like such a dork for asking about it, but if you could just leave a comment on my blog- http://www.livinglife4jesushchrist.blogspot.com when you get a chance! Thank you so much!
~Lydia~
CHEATER!!! But that’s ok, because we’ve watched “It’s a Wonderful Life” twice already, and that usually doesn’t happen until after Thanksgiving! I’m commenting on your DC post too. You are so funny! I had a lot of fun reading through it and seeing all your pictures. Makes me want to go visit out there. The table, you should definitely go back and buy it! I like all the furniture there!!! Hope you’re all doing well. We’ve been sick with swine flu for over a week now. We’re almost done……I think. I say that and then someone gets another fever back. lol! Can’t last forever though!!! =) Love ya!
I laughed and laughed about the scissors! Amber, you kind of remind me of one of my sisters (Mary Hope) who has an awesome sense of humor and style and is so fun. If you lived near me, I would be asking you for advice on decorating my house. You have such a gift!!
